International telephone calls

Post by rick » November 22, 2014, 8:28 pm

I know this crops up from time to time, but been a while. I occasionally phone my old Mum back in the UK to let her know i am still alive. The last call the credit disappeared real quick, so i checked the call rate - 17 baht a minute. I'm sure that is a lot more than a year or two ago. So, my question is, what options for cheaper calls? I don't use contract as rarely use my phone, and Skype is out as the call quality would probably make a conversation with my mum impossible ( she's over 90 and it's a struggle on the phone to understand her!)

I have been told if you use 09 instead of 00 or + it's a lot cheaper so 0944 for UK.
Haven't tried it myself but was from a reliable source.

Have been using Skype for years, great service and cheap.

Depending on you service provider you can sometimes make cheap international calls through them.
Here is a list of all the keypress codes for the Thai telephone providers..
http://thaiprepaidcard.com/ussd-keypress-codes/

I use True Move & usually use their 'premium' international call code
006+Country Code+Area Code+Destination Number
It always provides me with an excellent connection at a very reasonable rate.
Their other option of
00600+Country Code+Area Code+Destination Number
Is a bit of a lottery as far as call quality is concerned.

I use Skype on computer to landline in UK. A subscription cost about 130bht a month and gives 2 hours plus an extra 1/2 free for paying yearly in advance. Being hard of hearing myself the ability to listen on headphones improves my listening experience and before making the calls you can use their free testing service to check everything is okay .The call quality is excellent, almost a next room experience .I cannot fault it. \:D/
Ageing is a privilige denied to many .

International telephone calls

I use skype as well
it works well
my mum is 90 next month and has hearing problems skype was no different than me using a mobile
I found the new tablet better than my 5 year old laptop for the microphone so the other end can hear better

Thanks everyone have somethings to try. I use skype to speak to my son but connection is usually a bit wonky, wouldn't do for my mum because she has some dementia and would be confused by the blackouts and time delays i usually get.
