Re: European Football team competitions 2016/17
"United finally get a result to be proud of in a fairly average European Group."
And remember for those that fell asleep before/during the game it will be rerun on PPTV (channel 36) at 21:00 tonight
Almost worth watching just to see Rooney score a goal :-"

Re: European Football team competitions 2016/17
The final round of the Group stages...
Re: European Football team competitions 2016/17
Benfica must be grateful that Dynamo Kiev find their feet with a vengeance & thrash Besiktas..
Citi did just enough on their own & then Barcelona finished the task for them..
The placing were already confirmed before last night's games, but Bayern Munich will be pleased to finally wrest a game away from Atlético.
Re: European Football team competitions 2016/17
The Dortmund draw in Madrid confirms them in top spot. Sporting Lisbon loss in Warsaw sees them slump out of Europe. Legia take the Europa spot.
Leicester had already won it, but I am not sure that the drubbing they received will do them much good!!! Copenhagen go into the Europa while Club Brugge fail to register a point.
Not unsurprisingly, Juventus manage the home win against pointless Dinamo Zagreb. Lyon already had the Europa spot tied up, but their win consigns Sevilla to second place.
Round of 16
The draw for the round of 16 will be held on 12 December 2016.[39] The first legs will be played on 14, 15, 21 and 22 February, and the second legs will be played on 7, 8, 14 and 15 March 2017.
Re: European Football team competitions 2016/17
Put those passports away Southampton fans. Saints are out of the Europa League
Re: European Football team competitions 2016/17
These are the qualifiers
Plus the 3rd. placed from the Champion's League Groups..
Fog stopped the Sassuolo v KRC Genk so the Group F 1& 2 are known but either Athletic Bilbao or KRC Genk could still win the group.
Re: European Football team competitions 2016/17
Mkhitarayan is looking a decent player and providing much needed width on the right for United.....good to see Bailly back in the defence and completing 90 minutes.....I wonder who will make way for him in the EPL,Jones or Rojo ?
Southampton paid the price for a cautious approach against the Israeli Beer Shavers and little Dundalk are out but their performances in this competition have been a credit to club and country !

Re: European Football team competitions 2016/17
So Genk top Group F,,,UEFA Europa League - Group F
Sassuolo 0-2 KRC Genk
Re: European Football team competitions 2016/17
Not too bad for Citi & Leicester, not too good for the Gunners, mind you if they had come second then they would have been playing Barcelona instead...Full draw
Manchester City v Monaco
Real Madrid v Napoli
Benfica v Borussia Dortmund
Bayern Munich v Arsenal
FC Porto v Juventus
Bayer Leverkusen v Atletico Madrid
Paris St-Germain v Barcelona
Sevilla v Leicester
(First legs to be played on 14 & 15 and 21 & 22 February 2017; second legs on 7 & 8 and 14 & 15 March)
The PSG against Barcelona looks like the tie of the round...
Re: European Football team competitions 2016/17
Full draw
Athletic Bilbao (Spain) v Apoel Nicosia (Cyprus)
Legia Warsaw (Poland) v Ajax (Netherlands)
Anderlecht (Belgium) v Zenit St Petersburg (Russia)
Astra Giurgiu (Romania) v Genk (Belgium)
Manchester United (England) v Saint-Etienne (France)
Villarreal (Spain) v Roma (Italy)
Ludogorets (Bulgaria) v FC Copenhagen (Denmark)
Celta Vigo (Spain) v Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine)
Olympiakos (Greece) v Osmanlispor (Turkey)

Winable ties for United & Spurs too..United's first leg will be played on Wednesday, 15 February, while Spurs play the following day.
The Red Devils will play on Wednesday because Saint-Etienne's neighbours Lyon are also playing at home in the Europe League that week.
Both return legs will be played on Thursday, 23 February.
Re: European Football team competitions 2016/17
As for the Champions League,I would be surprised if Leicester beat Sevilla over two legs.Sevilla have won the Europa League for the last 3 seasons and are currently 3rd in Serie A.
Arsenal are playing well and have a chance of overcoming Bayern.Citeh will have to be wary of Monaco, who beat The Spuds twice in the group stages, and will certainly have to improve on their recent shambolic defending if they are to go through.
In the Europa League both United and The Spuds have a good chance of progressing.....on paper anyway

Re: European Football team competitions 2016/17
Did you watch it Bob?
Barca were embarrassing, Messi/Neymar/Suarez didn't look like they could score with a hooker in Day & Night let alone in the football match . Iniesta looked completely out of ideas as well. Didn't actually realise Suarez was playing until about 35th minute when he received (and lost) the ball and the camara zoomed in on him
PSG were NOT that good ..... both Draxler & Di Maria were made to look good by very poor defending on a number of occasions, and they also both passed the ball to nobody or a Barca defender numerous times
If that's the standard those two will play in the competition, it's now down to Atletico, Real, Munich, Arsenal, Man City or Leicester to win it :-"

No, haven't watched it yet Statts.
Will do so, later, when it is on YouTube.
I have read the Beeb report though..
I saw that they made the man that vanG managed to make look ordinary, man of the match.
Although, much like you have said, they put the result down to a very poor Barca performance as PSG brilliance. Messi, especially, came in for some fierce criticism, but I gather that the 3 of them up front didn't manage a shot on target all game...

If you are at a loose end tonight, or fancy seeing how the mighty are fallen PPTV (Ch 36) are showing a rerun at 21:45.
Suppose its not a bad way to use up some of the time until the Munich v Arsenal game is shown (from 02:15 same channel)

Re: European Football team competitions 2016/17
The Gunners managed to go in at half time all square at 1 each, but they lost Laurent Koscielny & the plot in 10 second half minutes of just more woe for Arsene. For a 'keep ball' (often too long & with little purpose) team like the Gunners to achieve only 25% of possession is somewhat of a mystery.
Madrid went behind early on but normal service was pretty swiftly resumed. Like Barca the other night their talisman, Cristiano Ronaldo, didn't find the net but it meant little to the end result..
