Best places within 5 hours of Udon

Post by merrill44 » November 24, 2020, 4:58 pm

What is the most fabulous hotel/place within 5 hours of Udon. I want to "wow" a friend for 3 days. The place should be quiet, friendly with good views and terrific food.
PS. I recognize that there can be small, intimate places with hosts so friendly you never want to leave. If you know of a place like that I'd love to hear about it to

Thanks

Wats Nong Waen and Chang, Khon Kaen or head north to Loei Province

Visit Chiang Khan and stay in the walking street in a hotel facing Mekong. It’s very nice place and view with good food and u can take nice drive via Nam Som for instance so u can get some mountain roads and Mekong river side drive as well.

Good shout Chiangmai Khan is a decent wee break. This is a view along the Mekong where you can walk / cycle. We also hired a boat for a trip around and you can go over the boarder by boat should you wish. It’s quite cheap there and there is a Wat up in the clouds which my Mrs went up at 0500 one morning ( that’s what she told me anyway 😂😂).

do not forget we are in covid times !, so all info about tourism should be best accompanied by a contact number to be sure they are still open and fully operational ....as business is not booming ...as info ;)

It is what it is....if I had a friend who wanted a Thailand 'WOW" experience, I would send them to the Islands or Coastline...not the middle of the sticks UDON.

If you want the wow factor go to Wat Phu Toc, plenty of wow experiences around Udon, you just have to get off your arse and explore.

I think it really depends on how easily you are "wow"ed.
When visiting the ferris wheel at UD town a couple of years ago my daughter was "wow"ed, but if she had previously visited and remembered the London Eye she would have been very disappointed.
When visiting Wat Phu Tok a few years ago, the only "WOW" I felt was "Wow how the hell did they get the safety permits"
Mrs Statts was impressed, but she has never been out of SE Asia, I'm sure if she had previously been to Switzerland, Austria,Germany, Slovenia and seen the scenery castles & temples there she would have been far less so.

^ Good grief! London Eye and Alpine eyries?

How about the Erawan Cave over on the Loei border? I was brought up in the clan cave just behind Inverurie station but I am pretty sure the local cave here will wow me in different ways.

"Within 5 hours of Udon"

Focus... focus...

When it comes to overnighting, isn't there a quiet and more intimate place somewhere out in the countryside near Udon? Called the "The Ricefields" or similar?

Yes, but my reference point is Khon Kaen City so via route 12 you go west for a bit and then head north.

Strange, I thought it was about Udon area, why do you blokes always refer to the UK or Europe? A bit homesick by the sounds.... There is always somewhere better but that's not the topic.

Well statts started it fatbob.

Anyway, I said Inverurie Station... there's a reason they built a station there. The smarter teuchters wanted to LEAVE.

No the topic is "What is the most fabulous hotel/place within 5 hours of Udon. I want to "wow" a friend for 3 days. The place should be quiet, friendly with good views and terrific food."

If you can find somewhere near Udon that would "wow" anyone for more than 5 minutes, that person is either lying or has led an exeedingly sheltered life and never been anywhere on holiday. Udon is a wonderful place for its people and friends, but it is certainly NOT somewhere to go to visit places or scenery
