Visa (O-A) rules

lep without knowing the actual dates, it is hard to determine whether NK immigration were ill-informed or correct about the validity of your O-A visa.

I have had varying reactions from immigration both at Swampy and Udon airports, and at the NK border post. They ranged from telling me how unusual it was to see an O-A, to seeking help from other officers, to just stamping my passport and passing me through.

But it has never been suggested that my visa had expired, or that my (2nd twelve month) extension was invalid.

Apparently his visa expired some four years ago and he has been on extensions since then. As he left Thailand during that time, he presumably had return permits unless that was overlooked by his return which is not likely. But if that is the case then he was entering Thailand illegally and his extension had also expired and as such he was staying here without a permit. And then the officer was right in sending him to Vientiane. To get a new visa. He could have been deported. The circumstances are not clear.

Perhaps I can make it clear
I have never entered Thailand without a current visa
I obtained my A-O visa in 2005 in London
I left and returned to Thailand several times. On each occasion My passport was stamped that I was entitled to stay in Thailand for another year.
My A-O visa expired in 2006 but as stated the stamp in my passport showed that I was entitled to remain in Thailand until 2007.
I didn't understand why? so I went to immigration for an explanation. This was a couple of weeks after my A-O visa had expired.
I'm sure if I had deliberately broken the rules I would have been deported or at least suffered a severe financial penalty.
It was then that I was told to go to Vientiane and obtain a 3 month non imm o visa.
This I did and since then I have renewed or extended my visa for another year with the necessary paperwork.
If this isn't clear then I'm sorry :D

When you have a valid OA visa you get another 12 months every time you enter the kingdom during the validity time of your visa. Thus an OA which is valid for one year will give you another year if you leave and return just before the first twelve months have passed.

Hi JR
Not in my case it didn't.
Have you had personnel experience of this?

I do. My OA expired last year beginning of October. I came back to Thailand at the end of Sept and am now on extension of stay and reporting every 90 days. In a couple of weeks I shall apply for a renewal of my extension stating funds etc as it expires at the end of Sept. This is with immigration in Udon.

My multiple-entry, O-A (Long Stay) visa has two dates typed on it,
DATE OF ISSUE: 1 SEPTEMBER 2009
ENTER BEFORE: 31 AUGUST 2010 (today)
Each time I had entered the Kingdom, two dates were stated on the immigration stamp,
ADMITTED, and
UNTIL.
Each time I had entered the Kingdom, the ‘UNTIL’ date had always been a year from the ‘ADMITTED’ date. The last time, these two dates were 13 AUGUST 2010, and 12 AUGUST 2011, respectively. It was clear that I wouldn’t need any more paperwork to stay in the Kingdom until 12 AUGUST 2011. But, because of some postings on this thread, I wanted to confirm that at the immigration office, which they did today.
I also got RENTRY PERMIT for MULTIPLE ENTRIES until 12 AUGUST 2011 for 3,800 baht. For SINGLE ENTRY it would have been 1,000 baht. I expect that the UNTIL date would remain 12 AUGUST 2011 for reentry until that date, that is it would no longer be made one year from the date of entry.
The lady who handled my papers was very helpful including filling up some of the items in the application form by herself. Total time spent including copying of some passport pages by the lady was about 30 minutes.

Being a total "Dumb-ass" ... I presume that all this info relates to American ex-pats over the age of 50 with a 'retirement visa'???

An O-A visa is relevant to anyone who is over 50, can get the health certificate and police clearance, and has the equivalent of TBH800,000 in the bank.

All these requirements relate to the applicant's home country, and the visa can only be obtained there.

It is a "retirement visa" only in the sense that it allows you (being over 50) to stay for 12 months (+ 12 months if used sensibly), following which you can apply for 12 month extensions based on retirement (with money in the Thai bank or pension etc).
