Visas and Health insurance

Postby parrot » January 20, 2011, 11:23 am

In the past few weeks, there have been several articles in the B. Post about hospitals in Phuket bearing the burden of unpaid bills for foreigners. I don't profess to any astrological predicting abilities, but I wouldn't be surprised to find the rules for long-term visas changing in the future.

Oh yeah, tomorrow's lucky number will be 27 or 72

Whereas I can sympathise with the hospital, to clock up 377 (mostly British) non-paying patients in a twelve month period smacks of poor hospital management and appalling fiscal control. A basic rule of private medicine is that if people can get away without paying then they will. You don't treat without payment. I do not think there is any law in Thailand that says you must treat someone, so send out the message that if you can’t pay then you won’t be treated. It is often surprising how many then find that they can pay after all. Any efficient hospital management should be able to recover 90% of costs in one of many ways.

I seemed to read an ‘anti falang’ bias in the report – or was that just me?

Our son had major dental surgery last week at AEK Udon Hospital....The lady from the accounting dept was there before anything started wanting a upfront deposit of 50,000 baht and was willing to finalize everything upon checking out... We had also met with the accounting dept when we made the appt and were told that the payment would be up front...
