Visit to BKK.

Postby douglas » November 3, 2011, 12:29 pm

Hi,
Had to go down to BKK yesterday. Flew down with Nok Air 0730Hrs. UCK. Went to Swampy instead of D.M. From Swampy to Wireless street, British Embassy, there was not a drop of water on the roads. All clear. Although most places had sandbags up. Got work that i wanted done by 1500Hrs. Got in Swampy at just before 1600Hrs to catck the five o clock plane to Udon. Was told at check in NO plane at 1700Hrs. I asked why did you not contact me and let me know this. Don't know, he said. I asked why i was not told this when i came down this morning. Don't know. I asked why they did not e-mail me about this. We forgot, he said. Asked what time plane can i get. He give me a boarding pass that said boarding at 1820Hrs on it. 1900Hrs came and went, no boarding and no info given out. 2000Hrs came and went, still no info. 2015 boarding to start. Sat in plane for 45mins, no engines started. Then they started, and we got into Udon about 2200Hrs. Needless to say i will not be flying with Nok again. I thought that A.A. was the worst airline. They even asked me why i did not have any luggage. I did not even answer them.
Have you seen the price of drink at Swampy. Had not had a drink all day and decided to get a small bottle of Chang beer. A small bottle costs 150B, and because i asked for a glass i got a bad look. i think they are taking the p**s. I think next time i do this i will take my hip flask with me.
Cheers Doug.

Douglas, the "retail outlets" at DM airport (International terminal) that Nok now use charge the same. Gone I am afraid is the old first floor cafe (with outside seating where you could sit) sup on a beer for about B70 and have a smoke whilst doing it.

You can get "cheap" beers at Swampy - last time ~35 baht for a Leo can (they have other beers).

Staff cafeteria (open to all) on the ground floor (ie above the basement), far right corner as you are facing into the terminal.

Hi Douglas.

You seem to have made good time to the airport in your taxi. Was there a lot of cars parked up on the express way when you traveled or was it relatively clear. We are returning to Oz later this month and we are not sure if we should book a hotel for a night or two in deepest Bangkok or somewhere near the airport.

Thanks muchly

It seems that many of the thai airlines, simply don't care.Or it seems that way to me.I believe in their mind they are saying,if ya don't like it take the bus,or train.

Hi.
Kevro. There were cars parked at the side of the erxpressway, but they did not interfere with traffic on the main three lanes. Yes the taxi driver thought he was "the shoe" drove at over 120K in a 80K limit. Had to tell him to slow down.
You will have no problem. I only went as far as Wireless street, B. Emb. No water on roads. Talking to the locals they said it was mainly North BKK that was affected, so you will be alright. There is a big place opposite the Emb. called Wave Place. You should have seen the boarding and sandbags there. I'm sorry i did not bring my camera with me.
Anyway have a good trip.
Cheers Doug.
Yes i will be taking the bus next time Trilled. Stay overnight, and it will be a lot cheaper and easier than flying. I decided to fly this time because of the floods, and not sure the bus could get passed.

Hi,
Jack forgot to ask you is this before you get your boarding pass and go through the checks etc. I was through these checks by 1600Hrs. Plane did not leave until 2100Hrs. Had a look around, down stairs is where you catch bus to take you to the plane. No shops. I walked around the place and the small bottles of Carlberg, Hinaken, excuse spelling, Tiger, Leo etc. were all 150B. The cheapest place i found had a can of Chang, don't like cans, my choice, was at 120B no glasses no seats. I think if i do this again i will go to the 7-11 and get some before i check in. Or do as you suggested.

Cheers Doug.

Doug, I am talking about Swampy.

The cafeteria is on the land side - ie before check-in.

If I have sufficient time, I generally do my check-in and get my boarding pass, then go and have a few beers (and meal if the flight is some time off), and then head back to outward immigration and departure lounge about 1 - 1.5 hours prior to take off.

You will do after having your AA flight cancelled and making other arrangements.

As for a few beers in swampy before lift off, I agree jack, the rice growers department is on the bottom floor. OT has used the place several times for a nice bowl of 40 baht noodles washed down with a few beers at normal prices. I'm always busting for a p1ss through passport control. Then after that it's 150 baht a pop. The beer not the p1ss.

OT.................. \:D/
