Volcano ash from Iceland hits UK flight plans

I just saw some graphic film of this on the BBC World News.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8621407.stm

Volcano ash from Iceland hits UK flight plans
In this image made available by the Icelandic Coastguard, Wednesday April 14, 2010, smoke and steam rises from the volcano under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in Iceland, which erupted for the second time in less than a month, melting ice, shooting smoke and steam into the air and forcing hundreds of people to flee rising floodwaters.
The eruption is the second in Iceland in less than a month

Airline passengers are facing disruption across the UK as an ash cloud from an Icelandic volcanic eruption drifts towards the country.

All of Scotland's airports were shut and there were disruptions at others including Manchester, Liverpool, Stansted, Newcastle and Birmingham.

The Air Traffic Control Service (Nats), imposed restrictions after the Met Office warned ash could damage engines.

All passengers have been advised to contact their airlines prior to travel.

'Significant disruption'

Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports were shut and Nats said it was restricting flights "in accordance with international civil aviation policy".

The ash cloud disrupted all flights to and from Manchester with a similar picture at Newcastle airport where all arrivals were cancelled and all outbound flights either cancelled or subject to indefinite delay.

Birmingham airport warned of severe disruption with about 90% of all flights cancelled, and there were problems reported at East Midlands, Leeds Bradford, Cardiff and Southampton.

A Nats spokesman said: "The Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre has issued a forecast that the ash cloud from the volcanic eruption in Iceland will track over Europe tonight.

"Nats is working with Eurocontrol and our colleagues in Europe's other air navigation service providers to take the appropriate action to ensure safety in accordance with international aviation policy."

Further south, five easyJet flights due to depart from Stansted airport were cancelled and there were also delays at Southampton airport.

Nats warned the cloud is expected to move south.

A BAA spokesman said: "Passengers intending to fly today are asked to contact their airline for further information and should expect disruption in the coming hours.

Easyjet said the cloud could cause "significant disruption".

The eruption under a glacier in the Eyjafjallajoekull area of Iceland is the second in Iceland in less than a month.

Further developments here:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8621407.stm

The Air Traffic Control Service (Nats) said no flights would be allowed in or out of UK airspace from midday to 1800BST amid fears of engine damage.

Airports operator BAA confirmed all flights at Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick would be suspended from midday.

And in Scotland, authorities have already shut all their airports.

Total UK flight ban now extended until 07.00 BST 16th April, when it will be reviewed. Some European areas have the ban until 18.00 BST 16th April, then to be reviewed.
As I understand it, the volcano is still sending some ash skywards. Hope it stops soon, I'm due to fly to LOS (UT) in 6 days time and it's reported that the insurance companies are refusing to pay out for losses as it's an "Act Of God".

UK Flight ban now extended to 13.00 BST, but Met forcasters predict that the UK will still be covered by the ash cloud at that time. Passengers being told that it could take upto next Monday before they are re-allocated seats on a flight.
Europe is now being more shut down, even 9/11 didn't cause this much chaos !

UK Flight ban extended again until 01.00 17th April (subject to another review), except for a small number of flights from Glasgow that are heading West away from the ash.
It's getting nearer to my flight (22nd April), and the backlog of passangers is getting longer, now I'm getting the jitters !
But I think the authorities are acting right on this one, safety must be the priority.

UK have extended the flight ban again by 24 hrs until 01.00 18th April, but BA have already thrown the towell in until 19th.
Big problem is that the Met Forcasters are saying the cloud is not moving very fast so it WILL take longer.

When flights do resume, anyone know how the seats are allocated ? I have a seat booked on thurs 22nd, but if there are passangers that have been waiting for days, do they take priority over the likes of me, or do they just have to wait for vacant seats ?

How many tourists fly from UK/Europe each day to Thailand ? This must be adding to the woes of the Thai Tourist Industry.

The volcano ash situation is certainly serious. At work, we believe that the Philippines President, Ms Macapagai-Arroyo, got the Philippines SAS to set an explosion to get the old Iceland volcano back into action to stop a couple of 'dodgy' lads here at LUL, who were about to be set free on the local filipino girls in their Philippines holiday! It has worked! Sadly, for the guys here, their early Sunday, Asiana Airlines flight, now cancelled, and they have to wait until the ash cloud goes to even get a Asiana plane from South Korea here, before they can be on their way.

It's not all bad news though. For my trip to Thailand later, a bloke at work has offered his barge to sail there! :D Unfortunately, at 4 mph, plus 12 hours break a day, hugging the coast, it will take 166 days to get to Thailand! And it might sink in too choppy waters. Other than that, its a great idea! However, i hope the volcano settles soon, i think i prefer the journey by air. :-k

Hi All,Mally this might help you in some way with your plans....I was due to fly last night(17th) from Bangkok to Abu dhabi and then onward to Manchester.I phoned the airway in bkk 22 times yesterday(4 times engaged and 18 times ignored)and also checked flight status online to find that my flight was going to Abu Dhabi on time so i flew down to bkk only to be told that the flight would not now be going as there were already over 2000 passengers in hotels and the airport in Abu Dhabi,i then had to stand in a queue for 2hours to try and find out when they could fly me back to the UK they gave me a date but also gave me the number of the office in bkk that is closed at w/end assuring me that it would be opened especially this morning(guess what?)it was still closed.I had to stay in bkk last night as the last flight back to Udon had now left and as well as trying the office number on Sunday morning i also phoned the airway at bkk airport only to get ignored again,by now i'd had enough of this cr*p so i jumped in a taxi and went back to the airport(asked the girls on ticket desk why 2 people were there but nobody answer the phones, they just looked at each other and shrugged their shoulders at me)to give you the end of this little escapade....i cannot get another flight until 1st of May,hope you have more luck than me,chok dee,Johnty.

Flight restrictions have been extended until at least 0700 BST on Monday and forecasters say the ash cloud could remain over the UK for many more days.

Transport Secretary Lord Adonis said safety came first and the signs for Monday were "not encouraging".

Several countries including the UK are carrying out test flights.

You maybe able to get back to the Uk via Spain whose airspace is open.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8628605.stm
Volcano cloud Britons could return via 'Spanish hub'

The disruption has affected hundreds of thousands of travellers

Britons stranded by flight restrictions as a result of the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland could be returned to the UK through a "Spanish hub".

Ministers met to discuss plans before UK flight restrictions were extended until at least 1900 BST on Monday.

Ideas included flying those outside the no-fly zone to Spain and then using the Royal Navy and requisitioning merchant ships to help return them to the UK.

Gordon Brown has spoken to his Spanish counterpart about the plan, No 10 said.

A spokeswoman said the prime minister and the Spanish leader had explored whether Britons could be returned by landing in Spain - which is open to flights - from certain parts of the world

Hi Dazzer, I'm on the EVA Air flight, but in reality it doesn't look good. I've got a Thai Air flight booked on 23rd from Swampy to UT, I'm not sure if they will let me rebook this at the last min should I not arrive in BKK, or if I will just have to loose my money. Will my insurance pay out on this ? No idea.
Now I'm seriously considering trying to re book my EVA air flight for a week later, but as I've got a chain (BMI man - lhr, Eva lhr - bkk, Thai bkk - uth, hotels booked in Udon, Pattaya, Bangkok ) it's gonna be a major feat to get them all altered to new dates. Johnty's experience doesn't hold much hopes out for that happening.
The new flight ban in UK is 07.00 Tuesday, Airlines are wanting to fly, but Met aircraft found dangerous levels of ash on a test flight. So far BA, Air France, KLM have reported no visible damage, and other airlines are carrying out test flights, but I'm not too sure about flying myself, a bit late to say "told you so" when the engines fail at 30,000 feet [-o<

A Glimmer of hope - Maybe - Scottish airports are opening at 07.00 tomorrow (Tuesday) and it seems that the openings are slowly rolling south, Manchester is opening at 09.00 although there's no news of how many (if any) flights are planned for the first day.
France is opening some of its airports tomorrow also.
So Dazzer, we MIGHT be flying on 22nd after all \:D/
The nigger in the woodpile is that pilots will have the last say on if the flight goes ahead (quite rightly), and also it seems to depend on the volcano not getting any more active than it is now. The latest report I've seen on BBC is that it's a bit quieter, the ash is less, and the cloud is not going as high as before.
IF we fly we'll arrive in UT on 23rd, and the Day & Night will see a couple of falangs celebrating in good style, before moving to Nutty Park, Tongs, Tawang Dang (or summat like that), and anywhere with a cold beer inbetween.
