Water Meter - Stolen !

Postby old-timer » July 26, 2010, 7:18 pm

OT's water meter has been stolen ! Now, what I was going to ask the members of this forum is - is the meter my property or the property of the water company. It's not within, sorry, it was not before it got stolen within my boundary, it was out near the road.
I hope I haven't got to pay for a new one. I remember when someone stole the electric cable leading to my property I had to pay for a replacement, so I suspect I will be responsible for footing the bill of a new water meter.

OT......keeping the utility providers profitable .... \:D/

That reminds me. When building and not living here, they stole all the brass on mine and neighbors, but left the meters and shut the water off, which I thought was kind.

My neighbor fixed both with PVC and now no reverse stop valve, they took those also, brass.

I have no idea who owns the meter, but when they shut my neighbor's water off for non payment of 300 baht, they took the meter. Think he forgot.

When had one fitted on land in April, had to pay charge for fitting, 2000bht and also 6000bht deposit for meter, returned when I'm finished with it or if I don't damage it etc. As you have had a meter in situ before, I think you may get away with majority of fitting charge but would not be surprised if they ask you for a deposit. Same applied for my electric meter but the deposit there was 8000bht for the short time one and dropped down to 5000bht when changed to long time meter.

Sorry to report OT but I am 99% sure that they will charge.
The theft bit always mystified me a little as a 'new/replacement' meter has to be set up by the water company. So, in theory, a stolen one should be of no use to anyone as the water company would see it as not a replacement from them (& so stolen) when they either were asked to set it up, or read it for the first time!!

OT, quick question, with you being in "Kampala" why worry about a water meter in Thailand, unless "Kampala" has relocated since the terrorest attack you said you were near a short while ago. ;)

OT's not worried about a water meter, on a property he hasn't even used in the last 8 months or so. It's not the one for my house where the wife and kids live. However the meter will need to be replaced sooner or later. OT's got a few places here and there, most of them in Udon, and one without a water meter.

OT........ \:D/

BTW, Gaddaffi, Mugabe and Gordon Brown, amongst others have been passing my office since Sunday, work it out for yourself. ;)

So with or without the meter I presume the water bill is still arriving.

About 80 baht a month standing charge, although there is nothing standing now. I had the water cut off months ago when I was getting bills of 3 or 4 hundred baht when the place wasn't being used. Someone was nicking the water from an external tap at the back of the place.

OT,,,,,, " I had the water cut off months ago when I was getting bills of 3 or 4 hundred baht when the place wasn't being used."

OT, I've read and reread the posts,,,,,,,,,, Are you sure the water authority didn't reclaim the meter?

When I had the water cut off it was by turning the valve and cutting the pipe before the pump, which I instructed someone to do. The pump is housed in building that is locked and next to the main building, so the water authority did not know about it. This place doesn't get used much and the water meter had not been reclaimed since I bought the place about 4 years ago.
I'll will check out if the meter was reclaimed as it is something I never thought of. My wife reported it to the police and they said theft was common, hence you see these metal cages built over meters.
thanks.
