What was going on?

Postby polehawk » June 26, 2007, 8:32 pm

A huge influx of users online at the same time today for some reason:

Most users ever online was 90 on June 26, 2007, 12:51 pm at 12:51 PM.

Wonder what generated all of the interest? Could it have been my joke about changing oil, wokkawombat's comment on "being tagged" or people eagerly anticipating Doc's comment on Udon Cable removing Fox News? All occurred around that time frame.

Actually Pole, I would have though that people were eagerly awaiting my single posting on Resepct from Thais towards falangs...

I notice that after that post - the subject died quickly whilst the Faux news one is still going - a bit...

Could it be that I hit some raw nerves??? If I did - I can assure you that is was 100% intended... :D :D :D

p.s. bandwidth quota exceeded its limit half way through June so had to shell out for more.

Lee, (being a suspicious sod whenever I get charged extra for anything) I'm just wondeering if you can detect from the stats whether that was from a normal business increase or is it possible the site was hit by some kind of internet traffic scam?

I didn't notice anything unusual in the stats, no unusual visitors etc.

Here's a graph, apart from a couple of hundred more visitors than usual everything seems normal.

another odd thing, how can the Topic " Website Down" attract over 41750 views in just over 6 months and be the highest viewed topic with only 2 replies and is not really about anything...check in the most viewed topics top of the page. Strange !! :boogle:

yeah yeah i know, i have nothing better to do. lol.

Yes I noticed that too. I'm guessing that the database files were corrupted when the increased amount of traffic pushed the bandwidth over its quota.

The only other explanation is that the 'website down' thread may have certain popular keywords that ranked it higher in search engines for certain search strings, and may have resulted in excessive clicks, but I can't find any myself so I doubt it.

I will try and explain this, by the way I apologize if my english is not so good.

I think it is Google or Yahooดs search engine that is collecting information about the website. If webmaster check the IP-adresses they will all come from the same one. I think it is called "Crawls" that who collects the information.

You're correct Jojje, the system stats show Google's IP address. It looks like google's googlebot is currently crawling each forum. Maybe they've changed the way they crawl sites these days because we never had a problem like this before. Usually the site is only spidered once a day in a matter of seconds.
