Where are all the tourists staying?

There is supposed to be a recovery in tourism, we are still in the high season and next week it is Chinese New Year.

About a week ago I booked a hotel room for Chinese New Year in the Sukhumvit area of Bangkok - I got it for less per night (including breakfast) than I have paid in (at least) the last 7 years.

At the time I booked, of the 106 hotels listed in the Sukhumvit area with a hotel agency providing instant internet reservations, only 2 hotels had no rooms available.

Today I checked again and it has changed dramatically, the number of hotels with no rooms available for Chinese New Year has actually doubled to 4

So the big question is, at a time when customarily you cannot get a room for love or money, where are all the tourists (and local revellers) staying for Chinese New Year?
