dbriggins: several Thais have just told me 'ram' is pig and fish food!!!!!

Are you sure it's safe for human consumption?

I just want to add a bit of roughage to my morning bowl of Isaan rice porridge!

For 350 baht, I've just taken ownership of 60 Oryzanol capsules that contain rice bran oil and germ oil.

Oleic acid - 210 mg
Linoleic acid - 180 mg
Gamma oryzanol - 8 mg
Vit E - 0.70 - mg

You take 2 a day with food.

I'll let you know how I feel after I've finished my first month's course!

Unless, of course, anyone else can comment on this product???

At the mall, on the second floor near the supermarket, is a pharmacy that sells fiber products. The basic ingredient of these and most colon cleanse products is psyllium husks, one of the best sources of fiber. I suspect other pharmacies in Udon also sell colon cleanse products. Unfortunately, some of these products also contain sugar and other ingredients.

Yep, that's the stuff...Whether it's safe or not depends on the mill, but you'd probably want to cook it anyways...But yeah, ram is used for pig and fish food, because it's high in protein and nutrients. White rice is pretty devoid of anything except calories by the time it shows up in your khao tom.

If you really want roughage, and some really odd looks, ask for a sack full of gap!

What's 'gap' and how should I cook 'ram' before adding it to my daily breakfast bowl of Isaan rice porridge, please?

"Gap" is rice husks...serious roughage...NOT recommended for consumption. But the look on the millers face when you told him you wanted fiber in your diet would be priceless...:)

Spread some rice bran on a cookie sheet and roast it for 15 minute in an oven at 375, or roast it in a wok until it begins to brown. It will add a nutty flavor to your porridge. Ram is actually the germ and the bran of rice, so besides having fiber, it's also high in protein. Wheat bran has more fiber than rice bran, and Psyllium husk even more fiber, and is tasteless, so it's an additive to a lot of "high-fiber" foods.

Forgot to mention, rice bran (like any other unprocessed bran) has oil in it, so once you've roasted it, store it in a jar in the fridge, where it should keep for a month or so.

Okay, I've found some yellowish looking 'wheat germ' is it as good as bran?

I was really hoping to find something brown!

Great news about the Oryzanol capsules that I've been taking. Within 2 weeks I'm starting to lose those ol' laughter lines that have been nagging me for the last few years or so!
