Where would you retire.

Postby Aardvark » May 9, 2009, 12:09 pm

After reading the UK Lottery thread it occurred to me that not everyone would be happy with their retirement in Thailand if they were to win an amount like 113 million pounds, (around 160 million US Dollars) I personally would buy property down South of Perth where the Coastline is pristine and the land around it climbs up into the Hills with natural bushland surrounded with arguably some of the best Vineyards in the Southern Hemisphere. Thailand might be nice for the three or so months when its cold and windy down south, but the rest of the year has a temperate climate to be envied. Where would you retire to in that financial situation ???

I'd keep a hoose on the west coast of Scotland, have a place near the Outlaws in Udon (to keep the Dragon happy) and spend most of my time on Hong Kong island out near Stanley Fort.

Impossible to say until you've been everywhere to form an opinion.

If I won a large sum in a lottery I wouldn't tell anyone where I would retire especially the inlaws.(maybe the wife)

I've said it before and I'll mention it here. I lived in N. Queensland for several months and absolutely fell in love with the place (Cairns particularly) but if I could afford it, I'd probably head a bit further South towards the Gold Coast. On the other hand, my folks lived in the Perth/Freemantle area many years ago and swore it was 'perfect', so I'd have to give it a try as well. Having that kind of money would open up all sorts of possibilities and it never hurts to 'dream' a bit. [-o<

If we're talking about money not being the problem,,,,, Switzerland without a seconds hesitation. The Italian or German speaking areas,,,, southern or eastern, as long as it was in the mountains. 2nd choice, Tyrolean Austria.

Sure is nice to dream,,,,,,,,, :-k

I know most people probably dream of a win like this, but I am sure to win this much is certainly a two edged sword. With massive funds suddenly comes a whole new set of issues that you have never had to deal with before. (extra security is certainly one, stress about investment policy is certainly another).
Personally, I would have been delighted to have won about a 500th. of the jackpot as that would mean a nice settled life in (or around) Udon with trips to local countries whenever the urge to travel (or the weather) got a bit too much and very few financial worries for the future while still having to be realistic with expenditure.
If the win had been over the 1million GBP ($1.5M) then a would probably take a serious look at living somewhere like Aa or Paka mention, the outskirts of Perth. Tropical climate, English spoken, just about the best of all worlds.... :D

have to agree w/Galee, think it would take me about a decade of travelling before i found somewhere to call home, and that would only be probably 1/2 a year, then out and about again.

one thing is for certain, it definitely wouldn't be thailand. here for 2 reasons, the ladies tolerate the age difference, AND...no big ticket items in the economy for me, such as real estate taxes, school taxes, and utilities are inexpensive, though in that aspect, you get what you pay for. food prices about the same as states, all other things are much more expensive and lower quality. healthy enough not to worry about high tech medical, also a reason not to be here if having health issues.
Florida Keys ........

one of my favorite spots, tho probably a mess now. Ft Lauderdale also. so many caribean is. to chose from, bahama, caymans, puerto rico was very nice, and so many quiet places on mexico's coastline.

money no object, would even consider half the year in Philly, best food town in the world, always something to do, some multi national festival at least monthly. the rest of the time in the better scuba locations, again, thailand doesn't even make the list. florida to bottom central americas would be my first choice, as i would relearn spanish in less than a year. still with lots of international travel, and doubtful SE Asia would be on that list.

I think the answer would be more holidays.... But of the places i have been, i would say Cairns (agree with Pak) also with that money could afford the deepsea game fishing; Florida (bass fishing); south of Scotland (salmon and trout); Thailand in the specialist fishing parks like Gilhams resort. As has been said, with that amount of money you can find somewhere nice practicaly anywhere, also the 'age gap' would never be much of a problem..   . The problem with women would not be finding them, but the divorce settlements!

Wouldn't stay in one place, would jet about a bit, a home here a home there, an apartment over there, a few months then move on The worlds your lobster....one thing is for sure, my 'base' would be UK, might only be there for a few months a year but would still class it as base camp.

That's a tough one for me, because I have to think of my kids. Probably move back to the US, back to California somewhere between Santa Barbara and Monterey. Try to live modestly, I don't want my kids growing up to be snobby little brats. I would also buy an RV and spend school breaks exploring the US, visiting sites like the Grand Canyon, Mt Rushmore and driving from the west to the east coast.
