WI FI????

Postby wokkawombat » September 29, 2008, 2:42 pm

Whilst idly splitting atoms in my vice in the shed this morning my ever active mind started to ponder ways of improving communication with the outside world from Chez Landy in Udon Thani. As my land lord and his wife are always too late arriving at the residence of a neighbor recently deceased and thus missing out on buying the deceased persons telephone land line I am condemned to GPRS which works ok but slow.

Eureka, Wi Fi, but WTF is it. Ok, a quick trip up to the laptop shop to enquire about prices etc.
The lap top seller gratefully accepted a small bag of split atoms then dropped the bombshell. YOU NEED A LAND LINE IN YOUR HOME.

In my blissful ignorance I believed that just as my friends can use their lap tops in guesthouses, hotels etc I would be able to use mine the same at home.

Ok in little words ( I understand big words but some of the other board members may have problems) what extra do I have to buy along with my WI FI equipped Lap Top if I should be lucky enough to have a neighbor drop dead in the not too distant future and can buy his/her phone line?.

I know I have to have a connection package to allow me to utilize free WI FI where ever I may find it and maybe use GPRS at home when I am not out sponging free WI FI.

Ummm, sorry about the atoms, that was yesterday. I am old, I was confused, today was Queensland nuts (Bauple Nuts or Macadamia nuts)

Thanks for your help

John

OK John,
There are two parts to Wi Fi.
The lap top has a receiver (nearly all lap tops come with this already as part of the machine). This allows your lap top to receive the wi fi signal. So, if you are in places like (for example) The Clock you can "connect" to Steve's wi fi Router and so to the internet.
So, if you are at home, you need your own wi fi router - which needs to be connected to a telephone land line. That is unless you are extremely lucky and a very near neighbour of yours had an unprotected wi fi router, in which case you could connect through him!! :D

You will also need a wireless router.

This plugs into the landline, which hopefully also has adsl. It then sends wireless signals (Wi Fi) to the lappy.

But you could also use the router to plug directly into your laptop, (without the need for Wi Fi) ie a standard router. For this you will need a network cable.

Now the experts can take over :D

Here John this should clear it up a bit. The picture depicts two separate devises two connect to the internet, a DSL modem and wireless router. One devise that combines both are available (ADSL wireless router), but you still need a land line to connect to the internet.

That's about the size of it, though if they have anything like it you will need to know what the Download and upload speed is and not the claims.
Try and get a unlimited package if you can.
I am on a 3meg unlimited for £12 a month in blighty though it is more like 1.8 which is enough.
good luck john :D :D
