Windows not shutting down correctly when sleep mode

Postby beer monkey » September 22, 2008, 3:48 pm

Last 5-6 weeks my windows (Vista) don't shut down correctly when i either close the lid of my lap top or select 'sleep' mode and when i turn back on maybe 5 times out of 10 i get the screen ie: Windows failed to shut down properly system error (or words to that effect) start windows normally(in 25 seconds or select enter) or safe mode selection etc...this is where i am sure i lost all my bookmarks a few weeks back(could of selected the wrong option), settings for options for sleep mode are correct checked them and have not changed them...so whats going on a program not shutting down properly or something, could do a system restore but haven't yet...anything else before i do..?

Good find bluejets thanks and it explains a lot too also get this at times(Faliure to connect) frustrating as it goes off with no reason but a restart gets it going again though(worked that one out a while back) as explained in red.....

"Failure to establish a network connection. Everything looks OK, but you can't connect to the internet. Your LAN signal will be there, but the internet just doesn't work. You must restart to fix it."

also start up drags on a bit at times(also mention in the linked article)...the first 6 months it was mustard sooooo fast touch the button and its on..but still faster than my old xp.

Essex Gaz...I can't find admin tools or event viewer...looked in control panel but couldn't see anything lick that.

EDIT..

Found 'Problem reports/soloutions section in control panel' lots of things in there 'reports sent or not sent etc...but nothing on shutting down problems.

What would it say or how would i recognise that particular problem..?

dont really know vista that well

try going to my computer and right clicking it and select manage

there should be a menu come up and the event viewer is in there

or type in event viewer in help and support

just found this

• Open Event Viewer by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Event Viewer.‌

BM, I think if you click on the + sign, on say 'Critical' it should list the events.... That & error are I guess the key...
Although, knowing Microsoft I guess it will only give you something to Google to convert to English!!!

clicked on critical and leads me to ..'Kernal Power'....and clicked further and its "a loss of power when in sleep transistion or stopped responding" sounds about right...and it explains things better for me, something else learn't today too.

It could just be a problem with vista
microsoft normally release software without being fully tested

when windows 98 first come out there was a problem with it shutting down properly and it took microsoft a long time to bring out a fix for that

have you got the latest service pack for it??

have you done all the updates on windows updates for the latest drivers for your hardware??

this might be a tricky one that you never get to the bottom of, until microsoft release another service pack of course!!!

thats one of the reasons i am still with XP

...just had a browse through that, and if my problem still persists i will download a service pack ..looks a bit daunting when you first start reading it all, but will have to be in the right frame of mind when i go further.
Thanks for the link..

you can get service pack 1 here

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... layLang=en

it might already be installed but if you try to run it, it will tell you that its installed already

i would do a windows update (on internet explorer, click tools/windows update and then select custom
see if it comes back with any hardware driver updates for you

Checked all updates whilst i was in there...and the last windows vista one was 10-sept-08..and had around 8 other Windows Vista Updates over the last 4-5 months too.
