Yes indeed - new news: the destination will be Nakorn Phanom. I don't know if it will start in Khon Kaen or Udon. I'd definitely expect a stop in Sakol Nakorn. Keep your ears open news hounds; there's bound to be more details soon. Interesting that this doesn't seem to have been a political football. My wife used to teach her kindergarten children a song about the train lines which has the end-of-the-line destinations for all the lines. They'll have to update the song.
What I'd like to see is some maintenance done on the cars on the Udon line; it would be nice to have tables that attach to the wall properly, and doors that open and shut easily. Letter writing time is here.
An interesting thing I just found out last week is that there are free train rides from Udon to Bangkok; for Thai's only and 3rd class, limited seating/crushing.
