Working on the railroad

Postby parrot » July 24, 2011, 9:03 pm

My wife spoke with a friend out near the Non Sung train station (near the driver's license building). She says the railroad is hiring workers for the new railroad and supposedly building dormitories for the workers.
Did I miss something in the news about the project getting financing......or is the railroad perhaps going on speculation that the project will be funded?

All'board: Nakorn Phanom bound

Postby Geoffrey » July 24, 2011, 9:32 pm

Yes indeed - new news: the destination will be Nakorn Phanom. I don't know if it will start in Khon Kaen or Udon. I'd definitely expect a stop in Sakol Nakorn. Keep your ears open news hounds; there's bound to be more details soon. Interesting that this doesn't seem to have been a political football. My wife used to teach her kindergarten children a song about the train lines which has the end-of-the-line destinations for all the lines. They'll have to update the song.
What I'd like to see is some maintenance done on the cars on the Udon line; it would be nice to have tables that attach to the wall properly, and doors that open and shut easily. Letter writing time is here.
An interesting thing I just found out last week is that there are free train rides from Udon to Bangkok; for Thai's only and 3rd class, limited seating/crushing.

Might be some truth in it, but will it be in our lifetime?

Working on the railroad

Postby FrazeeDK » July 26, 2011, 8:13 pm

clearing of land adjacent to both sides of the tracks for about 150 meters at the Nong Takai railway station which is about 2 km east of RTE 2 by the Nursing College/Thai Army Field artillery Camp south of Non Soong. I've wondered when construction on a rail head or siding might take place there as it is immediately in the area of the large Udon South Potash deposit. Large exploitation of this deposit would definitley require a railhead/siding.. Of course, as noted it could be a spur heading over to Sakon Nakhon or NKP too...

Working on the railroad

the news article is quite recent and refers only to a company starting to do survey work which would not require clearing any land.. I'd be more inclined to think a back door has been breached on the long awaited Environmental Impact Statement for the Potash mining concession...
