Xmas in Udon.

Postby BobHelm » November 23, 2011, 8:46 pm

I noticed that Centra are attempting to put some decorations up on the currently being refurbished Complex.
Quite a difficult task, trying to make a building site look festive. :D
Seems a bit of a concentration on rather a 'circus look', which is a little bizarre - clowns very much to the fore of the decorations.
But, hey-ho, this is Thailand, not a Christian nation & I guess I have to commend the effort, if not the theme... :D

Xmas in Udon.

At least for a Buddhist nation they call it what it is is.
UD will be the focus for the celebrations this year, whilst Central Mall is still a building site.
Nice to see Makro with tons of Christmas trees, and decorations. (Made in China)
Unlike Britain where local councils are fearful of upsetting Muslims, and keeping it PC, to continue the myths of multicultralism and diveristy. One of the UK biggest tourist attractions 2km from my place calls Christmas "Festival of Light". What's wrong with Christmas Lights?

Now why should we do that? Whether you celebrate Xmas for its religious significance, festive spirit or just simply a shopping bonanza, Xmas is where you are and what your heart feels .
Are you really that taxman. I am awaiting a rebate from you . Now that will really make my Xmas .

Xmas in Udon Thani

Postby JimboPSM » November 24, 2011, 12:27 pm

Christmas festivities in Asia have precious little to do with Christmas per se - and it has just about the same religious significance as it now does in the West.

Christmas is simply another profit opportunity that entrepreneurial Asian businesses have been taking with a domestic market spending demographic which has been becoming increasingly enamoured with certain aspects of Western culture.

This is not a new phenomenon, it has been happening over the last few decades and it could not have happened to the degree that it has done in Asia without a large and growing Asian customer base as the number of Westerners are, in relative terms, immaterial.

Christmas, New Year, Valentine’s Day, Halloween etc are, just as they are in the West, all just opportunities for entrepreneurial businesses in Asia to increase their profitability.

Spot on =D>
I have to agree, nowhere on any forum does the 'real' reason for Christmas get mentioned only the food, drink, gifts and parties, thankfully I do not subscribe to the commercialism.

And what may I ask is the 'real' reason for Christmas?

Now that is a very good but debatable question which as a Buddhist I am not in a position to answer for the religious significance. However you must take the name Christ in the title as a clue and presume its to do with Christianity. Supposedly the birth of the founder but this is in doubt as many scholars proclaim the actual date is unknown and the festival date was taken from a previous pagan festival. So with so much doubt and confusion, lets all celebrate it in our own way whether it be on our knees, with our loved ones or just down the pub .MERRY XMAS EVERYONE \:D/

If you were brought up in a Christian country with Christian beliefs and don't know then I'm certainly not going to explain it.

Supposedly the birth of the founder but this is in doubt as many scholars proclaim the actual date is unknown and the festival date was taken from a previous pagan festival.

In doubt but not proven and although that may be the case however it is universally recognised and celebrated as his birth.
and yet it is used throughout the world as a commercial exercise.

More families fall into debt in the west over Christmas than at any other time of year a shocking fact!

Can you tell me why is it more shocking to go into debt at Xmas than at other times ? Doesn't seem logical to me .
