Bribery is illegal. Both parties are criminal.

My tessaban made it sufficiently inconvenient for me to obtain a yellow book, so I haven't inquired again since.

I think that (as usual?), there are different standards applied, depending on where you live.

I enquired at the Amphur in Udon Thani and it seems they issue a lot of yellow books, primarily off the back of the Thai held Blue book, for the same property. I talked around the subject quite a bit, but it always came back to my wife having her name on a blue book for our house in Udon being the necessary "document".. Maybe another official would want something different, almost certainly an office in another town may apply the rulles diffreently.

Interestingly, in Phuket the Amphur never issue them. Even when I went to my Thai lawyer, they said they HAD heard of them, but never seen them. I think the reason is that Phuket has so many Farang, that enough rules have been bent to accomodate them to the extent that a yellow book is never required for most things. I got a phone line, bought a car and a moterbike, got a drivers licence etc in Phuket and a yellow book was never mentioned. In Udon, I couldn't do any of those things without a yellow book, at least, not simply.

Whilst Immigration seem decidedly unimpressed by the possession of a yellow book, it has been beneficial when obtaining a drivers ,license or buying and registering a new car or motorbike .So if no hassle to get, I feel its worthwhile .

Can someone tell me what the advantage is of having a yellow book ? OT has never had one, and never had any trouble whatsoever. I've done the normal things like getting my driving license, buying cars, motorcycles, houses, land and even more - all in my wifes name of course, so, can someone please explain to me what the advantage is with having a yellow house book? I get visas easily enough in London without a yellow book.
I've not read the thread because I think it's a load of bollox.

Here is the difference between you, khun paul, and me, OT. I know for a fact I have lived in Udon far longer than you, I also have that embarrassing PM you sent me when you thought everyone was picking on you...so keep on if you like.

Ok so you do live here or not as the case may be, but the importance of the yellow book was obviously lost on you. It is in fact a document issued which shows you have a verifiable address and that the Thai Government is aware. TRhis can be used in great many ways and can avoid all sorts of problems with Imm, Banks and other places which need an address.
I am in fact amazed that a person such as you with a track record of knowledge second to none was not aware of the possible importance of this. However as with many things one can be mistaken.

The reason I got mine is because I thought it was a check in the box for living here (need to have). But I don't really think there's any great advantage to having one. I've only used mine for obtaining a DL & opening bank accounts (how often that's happen?) If you can do all the "normal things" without than I wouldn't worry about it. Although, it has come in handy at times when trying to explain where I live or have to give out my address.

The Question still remains "what is the advantage of having a yellow book". I have opened a bank account without one, My Thai driving license has my address in Thailand on it, I've never been asked for it ever to buy anything, I have also obtained one year non "O" multiple entry Thai Visas in London and Africa and a single entry visa in Laos without the need of a yellow book.
Sorry, I can't see any reason of having a yellow book, However I do have a passport for my car so I can drive to laos rather than get the bus and taxi. I have found that thing useful.

I think Martynsnowman pointed out the the major benefit of having the yellow house book; Once you have the book in hand, you are able to prove your residence address even though you may have an uncooperative wife, girlfriend, or landlord. If you live in your own home (for example a condominium), the book is indispensable.

No requirement for one and probably no definitive advantage. As OT says, anything someone can do with one, you can do without.
I flash mine to get into parks at the Thai rate, in banks when they ask for passport, to the cops when they ask for license/registration, etc. Maybe the slight advantage is that it separates you from the riffraff (tourists).
