Mak,
My Thai's not the best, but from what I decypher (I searched google for: สวนสัตว์ เขาสวนกวาง) at http://forum.khonkaenlink.info/index.ph ... #msg928741
the zoo is in Nam Phong (น้ำพอง) which is south of Kaosuankwang (intersects with hwy 2039). Looks like a big place at 4000 rai, giraffes, wild ox, goats, deer.
More info at http://www.udon108.com/board/index.php?topic=21034.0 includes a telephone number 087-261-4780, he confirmed the zoo is about 7km off the highway toward Namphong. You might want to give a call to confirm before heading off. Don't forget to stop off and have some Khaosuankwang bbq chicken and pork lahb (for me!). Let us know what you find out!

The Zoo is actually on the "Mountain " about 6km east of Khosunkwang and 15km north of Nampong so it is really Khosuankwang, infact its halfway from our house in Bana anthong to the main Khonkaen - Udon highway.I haven't been yet as we are currently in the UK till April but once the Songkran celebrations are over I will be taking a short trip up to see whats what. From what I can gather at the moment there aren't to many animals there yet ,i think they have deer , camels, merecats, boars, snakes and rumor has it there is or shortly will be a couple of gorillas that they are hoping will bread.Over the next 24 months they are bringing in lions, tigers, elephants etc and are supposed to be spending a total of 250 billion baht on the project over 3 years. If they do it should rival Changmai zoo which can only be a good thing for Issarn. If anyone wants to go , it is now signposted from the highway so is easy to find.If you go on a Friday call in at the blue elephant ( situated between the bank and the service station) around 5pm and say hi to the local ferang out for a few cold ones on what has become known as "ferang Friday".
chok dee,
Mick ( from a cold and miserably wet UK)

Apes to feature at new Khon Kaen zoo

By THE NATION ON SUNDAY
Khon Kaen

Published on July 4, 2010

Gorillas, orang-utans and chim-panzees will be the star attrac-tions on display at Khao Suan Kwang Zoo in Khon Kaen when it is officially opens early next year, Zoological Department chief Sophon Damnui said yesterday.

Sophon performed the south-ern Nora dance to worship holy spirits at the zoo. After, he said it would be the most perfect place in Asia exhibiting giant monkeys and rare animals without scales after it opens in March next year.

The 5,000-rai zoo is located in Khao Suan Kwang district, near Udon Thani province's Nonsa-ard district. It was half finished at present, he said, but people could visit some of the zones that had been completed.

The Cabinet has approved over Bt3 billion to build the zoo.

Apart from giant bird and monkey zones, the zoo will also provide academic zones to pass on knowledge about wildlife. There will also be a breeding and research centre. Visitors will be able to hike and camp within the facility as well.

The zoo would promote tourism through links with Laos to lure more Lao tourists to visit the site.

Hi,
Been to the zoo near Korat, the one on the 304 road, about 10 to 12K heading South from highway 2. It is very good and well worth a visit IMO. If Khon Kaen zoo is anything like this it will be good for the area,
Going down that way at the end of the month so if I have time will call into the Blue Elephant.
