1973 (2516) divorce procedure

Post by garyc001 » April 19, 2012, 12:40 am

In 1973 my Thai wife and I mutually agreed to a divorce. We both signed at the Udorn district office. I returned to the States. Now I find I need proof of the 1973 divorce. How do I go about acquiring this proof.

Assuming you're still in the US, you might consider contacting Prachoom Wittaya Translations, Address 75 Udon Dutsadi Road, Udon Thani, Thailand, 41000
Telephone 042-221-238 Fax 042-247-365 Website www.pwtranslations.com

Booei (I think that's how you spell her name) speaks fluent English and has many contacts in the different government agencies. If she can get the document, she can translate it for you as well. Her fees are reasonable.

Thanks parrot. My Thai wife will be going to Udorn late next week and I will have her contact Booei. Hope she can help.
I was told by the district office that the records are too old to find. Pre-computer days.

Excuse me if this is a daft question now, but I imagine, back in 1973, both yourself and wife were given divorce papers(as today's procedure )but you lost yours?

In 1973 the procedure for an uncontested divorce was much different than today. Husband and wife went to the district office, showed marriage certificates, agreed to uncontested, and signed in the registry book. I left Udorn the next day with no paperwork showing the divorce. My wife may have had some, but she moved to Singburi. Lost contact with her. Now I need proof of the divorce from the district office. I doubt seriously that they can find any record that old.

If Prachoom can't uncover the certificate, you might want to try the Jaturong and Pimonmart Law Office that is just down the street from the municipality building, 19/11 Pan Praw (ถนนพานพร้าว) Rd, Udon, tel. 042-211-011 or 081-661-0958.

Happy to say that, although they couldn't locate the original divorce papers, they did forward a letter to me saying the documents were unavailable due to damage to the archived books. This was sufficient to satisfy USCIS. Thanks for all your help.

Were you able to get the letter on your own....or did you go through a lawyer/agency?

Glad things worked out for you.

We met with the administrative manager at the district office, searched through what seemed like a million records, but could not find the dates in question. The manager said the book we signed was probably damaged over the last 40 years and gave me the letter stating that the record was damaged. Had it certified, translated, and forwarded to USCIS.
Again, thanks for all the help and advice.
