Re: 2017 Ashes Tour
I have to hope that younger talent will be given a chance Waz..
But with these selectors, probably, YES...

Re: 2017 Ashes Tour
Yes congrats to the Aussies although I,m sure their fans would admit if Stokes would have been available then 2-2 would have been the likely outcome of the series!
Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last.

Re: 2017 Ashes Tour
There will be some here who may want to gloat but, aussies be the humble type, we will accept the victory for what it is.
It's only an ashes series and of no real meaning to most.
Although it was the 2nd highest attended ashes series only after a Bradman series way back after the depression. He only pulled the crowds in because there was no TV.

Well im eating Humble Marsh Pie, happy to
Was expecting a closer series to be honest.
Stokes was missed as he was needed to provide that knock out punch on the field also

Re: 2017 Ashes Tour
But I digress
The poms have a few days respite from the hot weather before it all starts again with a tour around Australia for the 1 dayers and a 20/20 game before the kiwis give em some hurry up, albeit in English condition in NZ.

Re: 2017 Ashes Tour
England have announced their Test side to tour New Zealand.
It means that Stoneman & Vince retain their spots while Batsman Gary Ballance, bowler Jake Ball and all-rounder Tom Curran have been dropped for the two-Test tour in March.Test squad: Joe Root (Yorkshire), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), James Anderson (Lancashire), Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Alastair Cook (Essex), Mason Crane (Hampshire), Ben Foakes (Surrey), Liam Livingstone (Lancashire), Dawid Malan (Middlesex), Craig Overton (Somerset), Ben Stokes (Durham), Mark Stoneman (Surrey), James Vince (Hampshire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire), Mark Wood (Durham).
BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew says..There is a first Test call-up for 24-year-old batsman Liam Livingstone, who will captain Lancashire this year.
Bowler Mark Wood is also in the 16-man squad, alongside Ben Stokes.
I think the decisions reflect the pretty poor state of available English batsmen. I also think that Tom Curran should be disappointed that he wasn't included after just a couple of games where he might not bowled at his best but had a far better return with the bat than Stoneman or Vince!!It does seem remarkable that despite their repeated collective failure in the Ashes, England's top and middle order are set to remain unchanged for the series in New Zealand.
Even Vince survives, having averaged 26 at the key position of number three and only 22 in 12 Tests overall. Indeed the only members of the Ashes squad to be dropped are Ball and Ballance, who played one Test between them, and replacement Curran.
Stokes is included but his involvement remains subject to legal or disciplinary developments. If he is charged or faces no charges, the board will convene within 48 hours to make a decision on his availability.
Wood finally returns after injury and the only new face is the hard-hitting but increasingly adaptable Livingstone, who enjoyed a successful tour of Australia with the Lions.
Re: 2017 Ashes Tour
Not surprised but disappointed....
No Rashid or Leach but Moeen stays.
At least Livingstone is in but no Hameed.
Must be the last, last chance saloon for Vince and Stoneman.
Curran very unlucky to be left out as he did OK in his two Tests.
I see Trevor Bayliss has announced he will leave his post in 2019.Why not now and England can plan ahead under a new leader ?

Re: 2017 Ashes Tour
Poms had a big wing today in their warm up 50 over game.
This guy Morgan the capt, Ive watched him a bit and he is a gun. Why is he not considered for the test team.
He got a lazy 81 NO today.
Yes I know they are different forms of the game but he can bat.

Re: 2017 Ashes Tour
A fair comment,Barney.
Morgan has played for the Test side 16 times and averages 30 with the bat.
He hasn't been picked since a poor tour against Pakistan played in the UAE in 2012.
He's certainly no worse than some who have been picked since and is still only 31.
Incidentally,I think James Vince looks the part and plays some superb shots but he's nearly always out the same way, wafting one to the keeper. Its very frustrating and I think New Zealand will be his last chance.....looking good but being out for 20 nearly every time isn't Test material,I'm afraid.

Re: 2017 Ashes Tour
Couple of things that came out of the pyjama game. Roy looks a better technical player than Stoneman and Vince and Finch looks to have a far better technique and temperament than Bancroft. Finch instead of Bancroft would make the Aussie top 6 look better for the challenge ahead in Africa. England do have a bowler who can hit 140+kmh. Where was Woods in Perth and Brisbane?
Steve Smith and David Warner looked a bit disinterested and possibly should be rested from these meaningless games. May as well rest the three front line bowlers too for the drop in wicket games. Would hate to lose any one of them before South Africa.

Watch Me!!
Re: 2017 Ashes Tour
Agreed Mark. There is Tye, Richardson and a couple of other good pace bowlers who could play in the ODI's. The guy Short (who tops the runs in the BBL by a big margin) could replace Warner and Hilton Cartwright could replace Smith. Also Ashton Agar is a good spinner to have playing.
Woods, the poor wee cherub, is apparently injury prone and not up to the rigours of Test cricket (same could be said for some of the other English players.........)
Don't worry the England team will do well when they get to NZ and meet conditions to their liking and play against mainly weekend warriors.

Re: 2017 Ashes Tour
Not sure why Roy has not been given a chance in the long form of the game. The general 'wise' press comments say that he is a short game player only. However he does open for Surrey & has an average of 38 in First Class games - which is not much less than his 40 average in ODI's. He was born in SA, but that has never stopped England playing them in Tests in the past..
Mark Wood didn't tour as the selectors said they were worried about his fitness - I think he had only just returned from a long lay off for a foot injury that has been an issue for him for years. He did go with the Lions to Australia & I think if he had looked anything like at full fitness they would have drafted him over..
