If you're trying to attract butterflies to your yard, the Duranta erecta is about as good as they come. They supposedly come in a variety of colors, but purple is the only color I've seen sold here. In Thai it's called candle drops (เทียนหยด). The plant grows and flowers year long......dry or wet season, warm or cool.
Yesterday while walking around the yard, the bush was abuzz with butterflies and I managed this photo of 4 at the same time.

Rather than open a separate thread, I'll pretend that a lepidopterist is a form of entomologist.......and someone who studies dragonflies is a form of entomologist:
Sometimes I set a slice of bamboo into the ground where I want my gardener to fill in a depression/hole. Dragonflies seem to be drawn to these sticks. This dragonfly wasn't keen on me getting too close.......but I used my best Master Po meditation techniques to draw closer for a better photo. I had to reduce the size of the photo to post it here, but the 12meg original on my phone allows it to be seen in great detail. Thank you, Master Po.
