Ken

Don't be too shocked at the sticker price. As I said I don't recall what I paid.

Heh, sticker shock is right! I got the following reply from Ace Hardware:

"Thank you for your enquiry. Sorry we did not put prices on our website as we are carrying thousands of merchandises, and costs of imported products are changed all the time, our prices are therefore not much certain.

For BBQ briquets, what we have in stock are as attached below. Yes, we can provide a local shipping like Nim Express Company for you. The shipping cost for a 12"x12"x12" carton size is approximately 100-150 Baht.

SKU Description Brand PRICE

810385 MATCH LIGHT BRIQUETS 6.70LB KINGSFORD 670
811488 MATCH LIGHT BRIQUETS 12.5LB KINGSFORD 950
810384 KINGSFORD BARBEQUE 3LB KINGSFORD 350
810386 KINGSFORD BRIQUETS 8.30LB KINGSFORD 570
810387 KINGSFORD BRIQUETS 16.60LB KINGSFORD 995
810025 COWBOY CHARCOAL BRIQUETS 8.8LB COWBOY 560
810026 DURAFLAME BRIQUETS 15LB COWBOY 765
804993 LAVA ROCK 6LB CHAR-BROIL 350
804994 HICKORY CERA BRIQUETTES 6LB CHAR-BROIL 440
802375 PUMIE 100% CHAR ROCK PREMIUM CHOICE 820

Please kindly let me know which item interests you. Also, please give me your full address to check if it is in Nim's service area, thank you."

Guess they have never heard of reading a database for the prices, so when they are updated, the prices automatically update on the website. ;)

I have posted it here for others as a guide. Prices vary quickly it would seem, so get confirmation before ordering. However, at 15 baht per kilo for the log charcoal bought locally, I think I will pass at these prices. ;)

Okay KB_Texas. Feeling engergetic? Need to set up a little project? You can find lots of cheap charcoal around Udon. Easy enough to put is a sack, pound with something and make charcoal powder. Then all you have to do is form and press the briquets. Here's how.

You can even click on a provided link and they give you instructions from making the press.

Hey! It's a thought.

For wahat's it's worth Home Pro also has BBQ briquets. Look in the garden section. I have no idea as too price even though I've bought them in the past. They work better than standard Thai charcoal.

Yes, HomePro carries the 'log' type of briquettes and 'natural' charcoal (e.g. chunks). I buy the log briquettes considerably cheaper than Home Pro sells them for from a local vendor. They are 15 baht a kilo where my wife gets them, and I think the bag at Home Pro is like 80 baht. Not sure of the weight though, but THINK it was 2.2 kilos. Could be way off on that though, so do not quote me. ;)

I am looking for what are called pillow briquettes here (or American type briquettes if you will). The logs are ok, but they do not burn as hot as pillow briquettes, and they are hard to arrange for heat and coverage since they often burn from the ends.

Someone suggested breaking the logs in half, and I will probably try that next time. That might actually work, and I never thought of it.
