Not much is mentioned about Thailand, positive or negative on the news. My son is a fox new fanatic and always has it on and only time Thailand is mentioned is when a disaster hits, the yellow or red shirts riot or the military does another coup. For us the Jet Ski video is just another made for T.V. 1 minute flash in the pan.

Time for All Honest Thais to Act to Stop Corruption

By Alan Morison
Friday, September 18, 2009
Phuketwan News Analysis/Opinion

''HE SAID the extortion gangs, including those in tourist provinces, worked under highly influential people.''

This is the last sentence of a report published in the Bangkok Post today. It is now where it should be, at the start of the story.

It's a sentence that should be read carefully by every honest Thai in the land.

The comment comes from Tourist Police chief Adis Ngamjitsuksri, who concedes that the extortion of tourists is a problem which the police alone cannot stamp out.

How many honest Thais are prepared to put their hands up, to help root out this cancer from their midst?

Unless honest Thais start to fight corruption, beginning with the extortion of tourists, Thailand can kiss goodbye to the prospect of this nation being perceived as a suitable destination for the world's holidaymakers.

People have plenty of choices these days. Why would they want to come to a country full of thieves, or full of people who tolerate thieves?

The Prime Minister has shown an interest in bringing corruption under control. It will not be easy, so he should start with a battle that can produce a victory.

Suvarnabhumi international airport in Bangkok is the place to take a stand. If corruption can be beaten at the airport, then the PM can set his sights higher by taking aim at a relatively small, geographically isolated province . . . Phuket.

If the PM is sincere about turning the tide against corruption, he could clean up Suvarnabhumi first, Phuket second, then make the island province a role model for the rest of Thailand.

Other democracies in SouthEast Asia are doing better in battling corruption. The benefit will come for them eventually in terms of increased trade and tourism . . . at the expense of Thailand.

What producer-director Gavin Hill did by capturing footage of a jet-ski operator extorting large sums from tourists was to expose a corrupt activity that has been tolerated for years by honest Thais.

The Thai media, including Phuketwan, should feel ashamed that a reality television documentary maker revealed, almost by accident, the extent of the entrenched corruption that has long been ignored out of fear, or a failure to choose right from wrong.

To prosecute the production company would be a travesty of justice. It's time for honest Thais to deal with the core issue, the real issue.

Stop the thieves. Restore Thailand's reputation. Save the country from corruption.

Interesting parallel with what's going on in the US right now.

1. Endemic corruption that everybody including the media knows about (sort of) but ignores.
2. Documentary film maker videotapes and publishes evidence.
3. Perpetrators first deny, accuse film maker of staging event.
4. Authorities first threaten to arrest film maker on some technicality, then as public outrage grows, politicians jump on the bandwagon and decry the corruption.

Sound familiar? I tried to post details of this on here the other day but it got deleted. Not PC I guess.

Let's hope that Tourist Police chief Adis Ngamjitsuksri can prevail and clean up this mess for the benefit of all Thais (and us expats as well).

How does what is happening with Acorn in the US have any relevance to this thread?

Nothing to do with PC. Also nothing to do with tourism in Thailand.

I am sure it would run if you reposted in the correct forum ie world news.

Jacksprat I am neither a masochist or izzie, but I notice you slag him off as well, if you dont like what I post simple answear, dont read it. It has nothing to do with you the areas I like in Thailand and it has nothing to do with you why I post. If its a negative so be it, unlike you who runs around bandung bumping into objects because your blinkers are on again. Or have you been thaianised. God I bet your a barrel of fun at the night market get togethers, with your witty acolades about the fantastic life you lead in a country that wants to censor what you watch and report in the press, nearly forgot the police force that has admitted its curruption is maintained by someone in a higher posistion.

I haven't slagged you off, vlad.

I just have a curiosity, and believe the question is worth asking, why you continue to closely follow events in a country which you seem to dislike so intensely, and make almost exclusively negative posts about.

As for my views on Thailand (which you clearly have no idea about) - I am actually able to see, and appreciate the positives here, and not just focus on the negatives (of which there are plenty). But then again, I live here, so I am able to experience these things first hand, rather than vicariously, as you must.

Nothing sad about me morti - I have never been happier than for the last 10 years of my life.

Whilst one could argue what happens in Phuket maybe of some relevance/interest to those in other parts of Thailand, it would have been of much greater interest and relevance to this Forum, if events and issues in and around Udon were reported. After all this is an Udon Thani based Forum.

If I want to read about Phuket, Pattaya, or elsewhere, I look at Forums that focus on those locations.. At least that's my personal view! ;)

Gosh, then there's little point in having the other forums or sub forums that comprise this website. For example, no 'Thai news' forum, no 'relationships', no 'world sports' and no 'regional forums'. Even the sub forum that parents this thread would be classified as just Udonthani video clips.

Of course, we'd have nothing more to post once we'd all discussed Udon and then the posters would drift away, followed by the sponsors....

Maybe we could have one large forum called 'general topics on Udonthani' and do away with the rest?

I have nothing against Udon Jacksprat in fact i have many friends there and at sometime i will visit my gripe is with the scammers, thiev's and lowlife thais that would rather scam people like me. And people that are in denial that they live in paradise.maybe you should get out more. As for posting negative Post's that jet ski scam and all the other scams aimed at tourists would not have recieved as much publicity to force the governor to act against the scammers. Have you ever left the safety of Bandung. As for slagging me off saying inflamotary remaks against me ie suggesting I am a masochist and your belief that I have a deep rooted dislike for thailand and its people is slagging in my book. Arjay I am a believer in exposing scams be it in phuket or udon thani just because its an udon thani site is irrelevent when anything of importance happens in udon post it like Fawn said when udon has been discussed for 5 mins what else can you post in here exept maybe the price of a good dog groomer in down town udon. Look at the last few weeks of post's Arjay do you see anything of interest happening in utopia like jacksprat seems to think it is. Notice you didn't answear my post about the head of the tourist police be it in udon, pattyya, or phuket Jack telling us that curruption is controled by higher people. Would the members of udonmap have heare'd about this Arjay if it wasn't for Big Trouble in TT i think not. After all its not the publicity the authoroties want you to know about.

You have a very vivid imagination vlad.

At no stage have I:

- denied there are scams (and plenty of them) occurring in Thailand

- stated or suggested Thailand was Utopia, or even close to it

- stated or suggested that you have a deep rooted dislike of Thai people.

BTW, I am not the only one who has asked why you keep posting here - cast your mind back to this thread (and particularly Roy's excellent post):

vlad, keep posting mate everyone has their input which makes this forum great. We do not all agree all the time, but in the long term it works out O.K. Jack is right to question you on some aspects of your post's as you say how much you can't take any more of the sh@t in this Country, and on the flip side when I read your post's I detect an underlying affiliation with everything Thailand. I suspect that you have a love like many of us, but can't stand the rejection you receive on occasion , but where in the World will you go where this doesn't exist ?? Remember at all times that you are in SE Asia and therefore about 100 years behind the 8 ball. It's true the Thai's generally love your money and not you , but can you name another Country that is different in this region, or even your beloved Spain or Greece. Many of the guys on this Forum live in Thailand FULL TIME and know much more than us visitors, and I've been to Thailand 32 times since 1999 and have been married to a local since April 2005. In my experience you just never stop learning, and I guess that's part of the Journey. And on the other hand, Jack...... F@ck up :D just my opinion 8-[

Agree........if something is posted in the correct forum section then whats the problem, thats what the forums are for...if members only want to read about Udon then just browse Udon Related stuff....its simple when you know how it really is,just click on the 'Udon Forum' and it will only show Udon topics.
Non Udon stuff brings in other readers/members...more traffic so it makes sense, we want more posters posting things and not less.....Udon is not cut off from the rest of the world its part of it.

the vids and disscussion are regarding Thailand...in the Thailand video section...!!!! Vlad has strong opinions about the video and Phuket in General, he is sharing his thoughts, no rules against that, if no one had opinions about anything we would probably curl up and die on here..... :dead:
keep the forum alive.

6.For those who feel too much [enough is enough I agree] ripped off in Thailand why don't you go home to what ever country you came from. You do not have too live here when you do not want to.
Totally agree; that's why I left Phuket for Isaan .. best decision we ever made

Amsterdam; arguably my favourite city, I was there for the Leftfield concert, my ears are still hurting :D
