I've had my Bangkok Bank account for over 20 years and a steady income with Work Permit but my branch is totally racist and won't give me a credit card, not that I'm desperate for one.

Same her , had my bkk account for 11 years . Went into the main branch on posri road and was told CREDIT CARD not available for foreigners . I then pointed out the cardboard cutout of a farang man and woman and 2 kids about 3 metres away saying credit cards available for foreigners and got the thai stupidity smile

I dont believe it ! messed up again today . was told by bkk bank on the phone to get a new mastercard , go to my branch with my atm card and my passport . Did that but did was not told to take my passbook so i did not then they would not issue me with a new card . What is in the passbook as i never use , all my statements are online . No pin or security on the book , just looked nothing in it except my transactions ?
Had my atm 6 pin union pay card , passport , farang yellow book ,thia drivers licence , all with security details on them but they want a passbook with nothing on it.
In uk can order a new card on an atm machine . i just ordered a new nat west atm card online as mine runs out in a few weeks . Will be sent to my uk address along with a pin sent seperately then my daughter will post to thailand . Utterly painless . If it was not for needing the passbook for a immi visa i would throw it in the bin . Not needed . Never had one before thailand with accounts in a few countries.
They pretend security but when i ent to register my last visa debit card for internet banking on my mobile i was asked to send my pin number by text message to top ?

Here we go again, Bangkok Bank up to it's tricks. In military hospital yesterday tried to withdraw money from the only ATM machine there , not BB, tried twice both times told "wrong pin" had to borrow money from missus, lucky she had some. Thought I would wait until there was a BB atm to use, so in old Big C Bangkok Bank branch tried again, this time it swallowed my card, went to counter they told me they don't have key for machine go to other desk and make new card, so off to join queue, only one girl working on there, so waited nearly an hour to be served, eventually got to tell the woman my card was swallowed in machine, told the same story, "No have key" must make new one, so after much form filling and signing proceeded to make one until suddenly I noticed it was that ruddy Chinese one again , I said no thanks I want Visa, no can do , Visa finished next month, this despite my expiry date on card being for another 3 years they are not honouring them after 1st Jan, then suddenly I noticed a Master card logo on a sign, so I said one of them will do.That was okay until she wanted 400bht. After all the trouble and hassle they caused me by taking my Visa card they now wanted me to pay for a new one, well as you can imagine I was starting to blow my top, fortunately my missus paid the money to shut me up .So off we went again with all the paper work and signing all over again, eventually after over an hour I had a new Master Card, so tried it in the ATM , it worked. So off home not exactly a happy bunny but I had a card to use .However later on I tried to register my new card with several on line traders including Paypal and AIS only to be told "card not valid , contact issuing bank .What the hell!!!
Came to the conclusion BB are trying once again to withdraw all Visa cards before 1st Jan by invalidating your pin number when you use a non BB atm and by snatching it when using one of their own, Why can't they be honest with their customers and inform them of the change instead of this under handed way of taking there cards. By the way I was using the correct pin I checked when I got home, so I will be going in to the head office demanding my 400bht back next week .

That is why I use KTB, they will not screw around with probably 90% of the Governmental workforce as their customers

Just a thought, does the card actually have your name on it? Mrs N's new MasterCard has something like Be1st Valued as the name & she had to enter it exactly that way for an on-line payment

^^^^ The bank passbook has the customers signature in it that is matched with their online scan of it. It's viewable under UV light. Having the passbook in your possession is their 100% guarantee that you are the owner of the account. It is in the small (Thai) terms and conditions print.

^^^ The notification to change ATM cards has been a pop-up feature on Bangkok Bank ATM machines for maybe a year already. The UnionPay debit card is no longer the only card they offer and MasterCard debit card has been available for at least 6 months. All changes and debit card options been advertised (in Thai) in their branches and in Thai and English on their website. It has also been discussed on this and other forums. I changed from the old VISA debit to the new MasterCard debit at my home branch in Pattaya earlier this year and I didn't have to pay anything extra for it. The clerk did ask if I was interested in purchasing insurance which I declined and she accepted but she politely gave me a brochure with details of their insurance should I need it in the future.

FWIW, I have only opened bank accounts at main branches of Thai banks. The mall branches, despite their convenience and having more flexible opening hours, don't seem to be able to address the more searching questions or more serious issues with a foreign customer's account or associated plastic. Trying to sell unwanted or unnecessary insurance is a common occurrence in branches everywhere and not unique to BB either. Whether this is through inadequate staff training, language difficulties (on both sides) or willful mis-selling of products for commission is clouded by the perpetual 'Thai scamming farangs' mindset held by some.

Just my experience and seeing threads on varying forums about 'issues' at mall or shopping center branches when things don't go to plan.

My Be1st MasterCard doesn't even have the 'valued Be1st Customer' bit like the their VISA card had, just the 4 x 4 digits and the expiration date. I haven't ever used them for online registration and/or purchases.

Just a thought, but if the card is an ATM card and not official Debit card might be the problem with getting registered for online purchases.

Well there you go, this thread had me thinking, I just checked my new issued SCB card.
Had to have the passbook, passport when being provided the new card. Was a question about the visa, don't have one, but the incoming stamp was fine along with pink ID card. Had the yellow book aswell.
Card issued for 5 years.
Had to change from 4 PIN number to a 6 PIN number
5 minutes all done.
It is called a SMART card, chip inserted, usual 16 numbers.
MasterCard with SCB Debit printed.
But, the strange thing is I just noticed no name on the card. Shows how much I take notice these days. Nothing to identify that it is my personal card.

Not unusual, I was using mine for a phone purchase and told the order taker that fact so the name used was “SMART” as that is on the card, no problem.

So STWW using your worldly wisdom you are saying that not having the account holders name on a card is not unusual. I must disagree with the "not unusual" part and have never previously had any type of card in many countries without my name on it.
This is a first for me and it may well be the case moving forward with debit cards in Thailand but not previously for myself. So eventually as time goes by you may be correct and it won't be unusual, but for now in my case it is.
The odd thing about the new application was SCB requested via a message on the screen of the ATM machine at the domestic terminal when I arrived back in country, saying to change to a new card with a 6 pin number, but on changing the card they required a fee to change over, which I debated since they were requesting I change cards but alas to no avail, 100 bht I think, this cost has been noted by a previous poster. SCB is just my personal slush fund account and I do only use it for my day to day simple ATM withdrawals. Citibank Thailand is my main go to bank and all my cards including debit all have my name on them.

I'm trying my best to do away with cash, debit, credit cards. Phone apps to pay at villa, 7-11, some restaurants like MK/S&P.

I don’t know about wisdom, worldly or otherwise. ;)

Maybe I assumed that it was clear that I was talking about Thailand ATM cards, several years ago I had a card with my name on it, however I’ve just checked and none of my Thai ATM cards (4 different banks) have my name including the one that is about 40 years old and still working.

So it is not unusual in Thailand
