Hi Nigglyb.
Had to take passport and the "medical certificate" obtained for the princely sum of 100 baht at local clinic. No medical checks just handed over the cash. The licence has my passport number on it.

Thanks for that

No need for a residence certificate as stated earlier in this thread then?
I'm driving past the office on the way to Nong Han today & tomorrow. Think I'll pop in

From memory, I needed different documents when getting my original licence (1 or 2 years??) and the permanent one (5 years). I do remember getting the medical cert (without seeing a doctor) for the permanent one but, cant remember this for the initial one. Of course I could be wrong and I think some of it depends on who you know at the driving centre!! I don't remember ever getting a residence certificate but I do have yellow book

Thanks...image does not appear to load fully with me...do you have a LINK?
The DLT website has screwed up titles

Ignore the renew title and the other mistakes like "PHOTO COPY OF INVALID INTERNATIONAL DRIVING LICENCE"

https://www.dlt.go.th/en/renew-license/

You do not want the "TEMPORARY (ONE YEAR) DRIVING LICENSE" page

You need the med cert for both the temporary licence and the first permanent (5year) licence.
You need proof of residents for every licence or renewal, the yellow books are one form.
You need copies of your passport and visa/extension of stay for every licence or renewal.
If you don't have a Non-O/Non-B/or extension of stay for either (or other long term visa/extension of stay) but you now have a visa exempt, visa on arrival, SETV, METV you should always get a temporary licence, even if you have (had) a permanent (5year) licence.

Of course TIT so YMMV

If you have pink card and yeller book, you don't need all the passport crap.....at least that is what they told me and they will not worry about remaining validity of your passport if you have the two aforementioned items. Again, this is what they told the wife. This was for second five year license.
Hit 'em hard, hit 'em fast, hit 'em with the one they don't expect, and just keep hitting.

A couple of days ago at Land Transportation Department office in AEK Udon starting at 13:00 I Handed over expired five year driving licenses (one for car one for motorcycle) two copies of my yellow housebook and two copies of the significant passport pages then waited a little bit before sitting through a 1 hour animated video presentation in Thai about road safety (time to read a couple of interesting magazine articles -bring reading material) then paid for the new licenses (less than 900 baht total) , had my photo taken, and was handed my new licenses. I did not feel bad about not being subject to take the physical tests.

Earlier in this thread reminded me that if I renew after the license expires I get a "bonus" of almost a year, so the new licenses expire in 2023. Out the door well before 15:00.

Before going to the Land Transportation Office I visited Smart Drive and asked whether they could handle the renewal for me. When the woman behind the desk told me it will cost 5,000 baht I must have looked a little shocked so she added, "...but you can do it yourself."

Just an update. I am awaiting a marriage visa. Don't have an IDP but have photo UK driving licence (I am 70). Immigration gave me a Residency Confirmation letter (after showing lease/owners copy id/blue book and the other visa related documents) - 500 baht. As my wife needed a Health Confirmation when she had her licence I took the precaution of getting one also - down the road a bit from Licence Centre (cost 60 baht).
Filled in form (well my wife did...) at Licence Centre, then had to take a colour test (with traffic lights...) and also a reaction test (emergency stop) via a machine at the centre. THEN had to sit through a Thai video presentation for 50 minutes....mainly about trucks having accidents....taking exercise....not drinking etc.....
After that paid the cost (205 baht), had my photo done, then my licence vallid for two years.

Interestingy we got pulled over about a week ago by police check on way to Loei. Policeman stared at my Uk licence...said not valid.....we all went to see head honcho who said it's ok but need to get Thai licence within 90 days of arrival (although he never checked what my arrival date was....it was actally about two months ago.)

Probably not. You are probably waiting for an extension of stay based on marriage. If it will be issued in Udon Thani it definitely is not a visa.

The distinction is important (not academic or pedantic) as the rules are different between a visa and an extension of stay.

All standard.

Wait until the day after the licence expires before you renew and next time you will get 5 years 11 months and most of another

Again correct if you want to be covered by your insurance. As after 90 days in Thailand with no Thai licence your insurance is invalid. It is a condition of all Thai insurance policy's.

Hi guy's , i'm sure this has been covered ,but i can't find the link ,on the subject of home country driving license use in Thailand ,i believe there is a limit of time you can do this ( 3 Months) i'm finding conflicting sites ,saying you need an international driving permit and other sites stating you dont ,all these sites were foreign site's , eg AA , post office etc ,is there a Thai web site that states yes or no ,,as i'd sooner listen to the country i'm in's version of this as it's they who are going to enforce it ( maybe ) also to shorten the vast country's eligiable could you please use the UK as an example

You can use your UK driving licence for 90 days. I was stopped in this period and told it was not valid - we went to the head man at stop point and he told the road policeman it was valid. I did not have time to get International Driving Permit before I came (which is valid for 12 months). Regardless of that, If you are here for any length of time just get a Thai license. Very easy. Medical certificate (max 200 baht, probably cheaper), simple reaction and color test at centre, then sit through a 45 minute video in Thai.....

I was again stopped at roadside check and was quite smug to show the Thai licence and get waved on!!

An international driving permit (IDP) can be obtained in your home country. Basically, it is a translation in English of your original driving license, so if your national driving license is not in English, it can save some hassle with the police if you can produce an IDP

Right ,i've found more as the question has not been answered ,The IDP or as some get confused IDL , is merely a translation of your driving license into English , IT IS NOT A LEGAL DRIVING License ,SO if you are from an English speaking nation who issue Driving license in English ,do you necessarily need a IDP , if not where is there a THAI driving law ( web link )that states this ,, Some one has asked for my advise on this as a tourist , i wont advise on anything unless i have experienced it first hand( which in this case i have ,but queeried the legality of it , to then be waved on at a police stop ,)So for me to assist here i would like an official Thai /police traffic law web site stating the fact , Cheers guy's it would seem no one has yet come up with a site ,

What ever your friends are doing and I'll assume coming as tourist, they should just get the IDP and be done with it. Why stress with out it. Carry there home country license with the IDP. It will cover them for any vehicle rentals and insurance etc.
The IDP which is for 12 months, will cover them for their tourist visa, 60 or 90 day or visa exempt, 30 day, duration while here. And any return visits during the 12 months.
