I just read this article too. Call me an old cynic but won't the majority of foreign nationals involved in reported RTAs be passengers in buses & vans driven by sleep deprived, yabba'd up & possibly drunk Thai nationals?

Have written to embassy Niggly suggesting some of the things the 45 min video MUST include, if it is to help British drivers adapt to driving here, and pointed out that they may as well save their money if they intend to reproduce the Thai video in English, as this would only lead to the Brits playing on their phones in the same way that the Thais do while it is being shown.

Just an heads up , my step son is here from BKK ,he went to re- new his driving license in Kumphawapi , ,,they have made him sit the written test ,get the new cassette implanted in his heed , and now he's going to borrow the Truck to do the driving test tomorrow ,
I thought this was strange ,so went on as many web site as possible to check this out , i gleaned from these sites ,that to re-new your license (5 year ) take all documents ( i dont list as it keeps changing ) do the stop test , sit or sleep through the video ,Pay the fee , have photo taken , your done , but what i did pick up on in the web pages i searched was if your license has expired more than 90 days you have to do the whole test again ,i think this is the case here , but will try to find out when he comes home ,

From a few Thai webpages I've read, if your license has expired for 1 year but less than 3 years, you have to retake the written test.
If your license has expired for more than 3 years, you have to start all over.

Correct Gentlemen , i now find out his licence expired a long time ago ,BUT the people i was informed of this from all stated that on re-newal everyone has to do it again ,(this were i've always stated Thai's talking to Thai's never give the complete information , therefore confusion rules ) they now know they were wrong , ( not that it makes any difference , ) just to cap it all my stepson also took the motorcycle test again ,BUT was failed along with many others ,the reason ,they all indicated to turn right , when there's no need , ( now having ridden bikes since i was in my mid 20's, i could understand Here TIT no reason for a left turn signal ," although i personally think both signals should be used " ) the Examiner is an Idiot ,( maybe paid for his position as an examiner ) Stepson decided not to question his authority as he still had the car test to do ,

Re: 5 year driving license renewal

Post by mickydee » May 21, 2018, 5:24 pm

Hi guys, renewed both my 5 year driving licences today at AEK and thought I would update you on some of the changes since I last done it plus the routine.
1) AEK now do both car and motorcycle 5 year driving licence renewals
2) The medical certificate now has to be done at a hospital. I used the one opposite Sport City. You need one for each licence (200 baht each)
3) Certificate of Residence required from Immigration if you do not have Yellow Tabian Ban. One for each licence. (500 baht each)
4) Driving licences for surrender plus 1 photocopy of each
5) Passport photocopy, one for each. I done the face page plus visa page
6) Fee of 305 baht for motorcycle and 555 baht for car
7) Safety video is shown twice a day 10.30 and 13.30 . Lasts for about one hour in Training room.
8) Colour blindness test in Physical Examination room. Indentify colours as officer operates traffic lights (red yellow or green)
9) On the day I attended there were about 40 applicants and in hindsight I should have attended the afternoon session which probably would have been less busy.
10) The queue card system was not operating and the license queue headed for the right hand side of the office as you enter.
11) Once your paperwork has been handed in you sit in the training room signing a book on the way.
12) When all the applicants were seated we were ushered to the eye test room and then returned for the video.
13) Video over wait for your name to be called and sit for your photo.
14) Another wait while the licence is processed and thats it. About 4 hours
15) Aware that the licence duration runs from your next birthday I allowed mine to expire passing my birthday by a couple of days. So my new licences expire in almost 6 years time :D

No worries it's worked for me for years, I also don't take the talking translator with me as like electric telephone water car tax etc just slows the process up.

The girls are quite helpful in there ,no need to take in a translator ,ISH , i took my American friend in to get his car & bike license ,they used the computer translator on the subject of Endorsement on his American license , the endorsement on his license was for the bike , but an Endorsement on an English driving license ,means you've committed a motoring offence ( many years have passed under the bridge since i lived there ,but i think it is still the same now ) it took awhile to explain /clarify this but all was good in the end , And No Video for him ,it was a Friday afternoon ,

Is a medical certificate required for a 5 year renewal? My last 5 year renewal did not require but on the forums some say yes and some say no. I know it is require for the one year. Thank you in advance
