Foreigners must now carry valid ID at all times
OK so now we have the DEPUTY Commander's take on what it means ...........
Anyone else waiting for the Commander to overrule him?

Fishing license, what fishing license, we don't need no stinkin' fishin' license...lol. Thailand does need a fishing license with revenues going to work on saving their fish populations. I'll never see it. In the mean time I'll try to find an "alternative" fishing license.
Still in wait and see mode, but things are looking a bit brighter. Have to be careful though, we all know the old saying, "Smile things could be worse", it's true, I smiled once and sure enough things got worse...lol.

You'll need a fishing, rod, reel and tackle license for all the fish that bite on here!

Funnily enough that is exactly the same information I was given in 2003, so nowt appears to have changed then, copy passport. Thai D/l and the neccesary to get it if required, that is , if you are silly enough to be doing something illegal that warrants close inspection by the BIB.

Well, I've got the rods, reels, a bit of tackle, there is no license requirement. I understand the "trolling" is quite good for a certain species down around Soi San Pan with 1,000 baht notes.
Do the DL size copy of passport picture page, and one of visa/extension page. Carry Thai DL, don't piss off the cops, ah that goes for anywhere in the world. Hopefully the Deputy won't be overruled by higher authorities. Also hope the HH Imigration chief doesn't get transfered up here.

so, in reading through the string we have the Hua Hin Immigration "policy", one national Immigration officer saying "yes, keep your passport with you," and another one in Thai Visa saying pretty much, "no problem." How about the next person that goes to do their 90 check as what Udon Immigration's "policy" or understanding of the relevant law might be???

Foreigners must now carry valid ID at all times

Personally I'd go with the man from BKK after all he is the Deputy Chief and the only one who appears to have an explanation with good sound and logical reasons.

Technology here is like going back to the stone age. In the UK, a name and dob check by Police Officers on the Police National Computer via personal radio to a control room rapidly returns resulting information. ie wanted/bail conditions/previous convictions/immigration overstay/driving licence details/disqualified etc. A check on any vehicle registration number brings up loads of information - insurance/MOT/ Engine and chassis numbers.I suspect they may never have this here sometime in the future, but if so it will be well after I'm pushing up the daisies. PNC in the UK is kept well up to date and updated by Police/Courts staff/Immigration and DVLA Swansea.
Here's tae us, wha's like us, damn few, and they're a' deid. Mair's the pity!

I've not yet heard that the UK police computers can record what you are thinking ...... but it can't be far offsocksy wrote:Technology here is like going back to the stone age. BIG BROTHER IS HERE TO STAY
And how many cases of police officers using the information for "Improper" reasons were "recorded" last year?
God knows how many weren't "recorded"

Loads still abuse the data protection act Statto - mugs. Lose your job and pension for something as stupid as that and one very senior one is under investigation at present, now he would lose a big salary and pension if he gets the tic tac.

I chalk this hullabaloo to the same typical overreaction to the first reports of changes in immigration procedures, passport checks, etc. The carry-the-passport scare comes and goes with the wind......and some people will insist on carrying it with them even while swimming in the Andaman Sea. But the reality is 99.999+% of the time, cops/banks/etc are just as happy with your driver's license or a photo copy of your passport picture page (which is extremely easy to photoshop.....if you were so inclined).
Every now and then you read of some person who had difficulty at immigration because their embassy letter was over a week old, or their passport had a coffee stain on it, or renewal fees are rumored to increase substantially, or the money-in-the-bank rules are going to double.......but when the rubber meets the road, most nothing has changed. If anything, expats seem to make life more difficult for themselves by overreacting to the first news of changes....rather than wait and see if the news has a tinge of Fox-overreaction. JMHO
Just for clarity, I'm not faulting anyone for reporting the Hua Hin story or potential impact......a good story to follow.......but in the end, nothing's changed that I can see.

I believe your assessment is spot on parrot. We've seen/heard a lot of rumors come and go over the years and, as you said, "...most nothing has changed". I appreciate the fact that the current Thai political situation has some folks on edge and ready to make snap decisions about nearly anything, but also, as you said, "....the same typical overreaction..." is something we are familiar with. I tend to think the hide and watch approach will prove to be the least stressful reaction during the next year or so. I'm pretty sure more issues will crop up regarding this subject.

Any new developments whether you have to have your original passport on your person at all times
Foreigners must now carry valid ID at all times
I've been reading in Thaivisa that people are still being stopped in Hua Hin and in Bangkok. Police want passport, not copy or DL. Our immigration people have been pretty good, let's hope it stays that way. I go for 90 day report this week, maybe can get some answers then. Kinda' afraid to ask, don't want to give them any bad ideas.
