If you are still running XP - update now!!

Post by BobHelm » June 14, 2017, 8:02 am

After the WannaCry ransomware debacle, Microsoft has warned of an even worse set of flaws that are about to be exploited by 'potential nation-state activity'. Microsoft don't go & name that State but I don't think they probably need to either.. :D

Patches that eliminate the possibility of this attack working are currently being released for all Microsoft supported products - so Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 7, and post-2008 Windows Server releases.
However, in a completely unprecedented move, Microsoft have also said that users of now unsupported releases - like Microsoft XP - can also update their system to eliminate the flaw.
The update will not be automatically installed on these systems though. Users must download & run these updates themselves.
However Microsoft have issued a 'how to' page where users can check if their system is vulnerable & how to apply the patches..
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... -platforms

At the very least I would urge any users of XP to install these security updates.. However the real solution is to stop using this product all together.
If you are so used to XP that you feel unable to learn a new operating system then I strongly suggest that you download & take a look at Zorin.

This is an up to date Linux operating system that is designed to mimic Windows XP - & it is completely free!!

I use Windows 10 on my desktop. I have a mid powered Acer laptop and an ancient HP Mini netbook. Both these old computers were slow enough to be quite irritating. I have tried quite a few different Linux operating systems and by accident discovered Zorin. My Acer laptop now boots in about 30 seconds and even I am able to download different apps and programs without jumping through the normal Linux hoops. This is not a stripped down version, it has everything that I want to use. Even the old netbook is now usable. Wine comes pre-installed. That allows you to use at least some Windows programs.

In order to try and speed up these old machines, I installed SSD's in both machines. They didn't help Windows enough to make it usable, but Zorin works great.

I am glad that you are pleased with Zorin, glalt.

An alternative to Zorin for those that don't want to use Wine - which isn't always an easy option for Windows programs - is ReactOS.

Here is a review of the system..

Basically, it is an attempt to write the Window Operating System using Linux - hence Windows compatible software should (will ? :D ) run on it directly.

I must admit that I have never tried ReactOS as I no longer use any Windows software on a day to day basis & so am very happy using Mint..

I replaced Mint 18.2 with Zorin. Mint was a bit too heavy for the low powered machines.
