Wow my first time to this section, do you guys really enjoy arguing is that the goal of all this?

Do Brits actually do these things sort of things in Pub? If so yes American does need a much different language. Here one for you, getting your running lights punched out. Now for those that a need translation, that would mean the angered party would in a rapid forceful manner place the nuckles of his hand on your nose, and would repeat that action until there was no longer any movement. Which is what would happen if you conducted yourself in this manner in an American bar.

Arjay Dude is slang and it is normally referring to a friend, all you had to do was ask, just as I do when I don't understand what you guys say. Don't see the problem.

Val maybe Aussies sound the same a Brits to you but they don't to me.

Help me guys if you can because I don't understand the joy of arguing about things that have absolutely no value at all. Nor do I see how it proves the value of a man.

Is this an intellectual thing that civilized and educated men find thrilling?

Me I would much rather find a way to communicate then to argue the value of one approach over another. In the end who cares.

Does the world change if I call it a hot dog and you call it a sausage?

You know this MF stuff that is hateful word, the spanish have thier own version Chi--- su madre, not something to spoken in the normal course of convesation. I had no idea what ------ was until finally asked someone is that in your dictionary cause I have heard that lot. How about Bloody, is that defined?

Now the truth be known I have seen some of this intellectual battle going trying to prove who was the superior person was, to be honest pompous isn't the word that come to mind at all, anal does though.

But you know in the end we are all just people, some good things about some not so good. But this intellectual approach in my mind leaves a lot to be desired, what value is there in trying to be one up on someone who is trying to be your friend, why not jut enjoy they effort in communicating with you, who knows you might even learn a few things.

Everyone of you out there can do somethings better then I, but somethings I can do better then you, so what

This argument for arguments sake really blows me away ( Arjay that means I don't understand )

Well this was a interesting first visit to this section of the forum don't think I will be here much, Be nice to one another, if thats possible.

yes you are right there bkkstan, M/F has been adopted by the british youth/younger generation, and its a phrase you can hear regularly,a lot of the youths in the uk follow the gangster rap scene, the dress code the graffiti the phrase's they even put on a false accent just to make it seem real to them, they really think they are the boyz in the hood.

Being a bit naive I have had to do some research on M/F #-o

I had previously understood this to be an abbreviation for Male / Female and for some time had been unable to understand its context in various posts on different forums, eventually I just put it down to a lack of education, ignorance and an inability to use the English language correctly for communication.............. anyway, after some research it seems as though I was correct

Hi Ray, I won't copy the whole of your posting because I only want to reply to one part. In answer to your question"Do we enjoy these sort of things?' Simple answer , YES.Let me explain. Most of the senior British universities have their own debating society, where the art of verbal cut and thrust is learnt. My own at Oxford was possibly one of the more famous, having had over the years no less than 24 Prime Ministers pass through its illustrious portals. I can name them if any one is interested. It is a part of the history that the Uni is particuarly proud, so we all had to learn them by heart. Now my point in mentioning this was , in London we have possibly the largest , most famous debating chamber in the world, The House of Commons. There every weekday can be seen members of parliament engaged in debate, sometimes humorous, sometimes heated but always in the most gentlmanly manner. Although it wasn't always like that in olden times, when the more hotheaded less polite did indulge in fisticuffs across the chamber floor. They appointed a 'Policeman" to control the more rowdy element, he was given the title of Black Rod as he carried a large staff to deter would be combatants. He is still in the chamber every day as part of our tradition, but not used for policing duties. The control of debate is execised by a politically neutral chairman, elected by the other members, who armed with nothing more sinister than a gavel and a sharp verbal''gentlemen, gentlemen, please"Effectively controls the proceedings.
For some reason?! the women chairman /person have been the best of all, not saying why, it could be simply the male members give her more respect.
To help you and your fellow countrymen to better understand debate and forums which have always been with us, not just an invention of the computer age, I will explain the proceedure in my university . Normally two teams from different colleges would oppose each other in debate, now and this is important to help your understanding. We would be given the subject for debate 3 days before hand, so we had time to digest the subject, but, and this was the tricky part, we weren't told whether we were debating for or against the motion until the morning of the debate.
Now can you imagine standing up in front of a very knowledgable audience of professors, who later can question you, talking about something that up until 3 days ago you may not have had a clue about, then arguing a point of view you didn't even have until that very morning  Daunting to say the least.
I hope this helps you and others to understand better the "beast " that is debate, then possibly you might understand why I never lose my cool and why I enjoy so much when the inevitable cracks appear in the opposition.
It is a game, just the same as your baseball or football. You don't go out there to lose but if you do lose, you don't get angry with your opponenents
you go back into the dressing room and learn from your errors so next time you win. :)

I would suggest to you that you might be better off''baiting'' those that understand the ''game'' your playing for your pleasure!
How would you like it if I invited you to play ''football' and began to block and tackle you American style,so I could laugh at you!
Ray is right, most Americans would consider your little bit of joy as a definitely show of disrespect and warrant an American reply!

Ah I see , an American reply? As per Bush, as per your scribes on Israel? Its very simple really, if you don't understand the rules, don't play the game.
My wife has just read your postings of yesterday, her only comment,
Mai sanook, and she's right, trying to debate with you is Mai sanook, and with typical Thai feeling something Mai Sanook is not worth doing, so why do it?
I will in future confine my debating to those subjects and with those members of sufficient interlect or humour to be SANOOK>

Thanks for the explanation Val, it is appreciated, however I think I will stay in my sand box.

I have to agree with Stan though an explanation of the rules would probably be a very good idea, as some of the comments really become very personal.

It would seem to me that the debates that you speak of would be interesting in teams, who have prepared the subject matter, monitored by a expert in the area. That seem much diffferent then what I saw here.

Me I have seen the reult of arguments laying on bar room floors, some dead, to many times to find any enjoyment in it.

But if it is what you enjoy more power to you, it is a NOB for me, ( none of my business)

Have fun guys don't kill eachother please.

Your welcome Ray. There are no arguments because the subject comes from a hat, not from the heart so there is no intense feeling on either side. There are no rules only those that apply to gentlemanly conduct.
I am unlikely to frequent a bar where the patrons would put brawn before brains so I have never encountered any problems.
As with my original posting, I have no strong feelings either way but as the NEW Great Debate forum seemed to be under utilised I thought of a subject that would at least get a response, partly humorous but maybe with a touch of reality. It was not my intention to get into a slanging match. As you will notice most of my replies were tounge in cheek humour. Obviously not understood or not appreciated, not sure which.
Maybe a new debate on American/ British sense of humour should be next. On second thought , maybe not.

No I don't think so we don't speak the same language that could get real ugly.

But I will give you guys a challenge, for a worthwhile debate. I have no clue so I will just watch.

Will Thiland law become more user friendly for retirees and what makes your argument,. for or against.

I'll post it and yuo guys have at it. Not my thing guys.

Interesting reply Ray. Are you seriously saying that a debate on transatlantic humour could arouse emotions to the point where it could get"seriously ugly"
Most of the guys on here are relatively ancient with the attendant health problems that go with age. Blood pressure , heart palpitations and many more. Would they honestly jeapordise their health by getting seriously upset by a few words on the forum?
We have a nursery rhyme in England that contains the two lines;
Sticks and stones may break my bones
But words will never hurt me. This is sung by 5year olds. Is it possible that some adults don't understand that?
Like your idea for a new subject. If I remember wasn't there a young man running around town writing a thesis on just that theme?

 I think that ''Controversional Topics'' forum is called for as the''Great Debates''heading might suggest a different approach than was intended. As I remember ,I suggested this forum, but not the heading! We could leave the debates forum for those that seek humor at the expense, rather than acceptance, of others! With the ''rules'' designed to offend and therefore gain an advantage in verbal ''combat''!Those with less ''interlect''could simply state and argue their ''views'' and ''opinions'' about different subjects with sufficient intellect to communicate effectively! If there are misunderstandings because of ''foreign'' words or misspellings, they can be clarified without underlying sarcasm and condescending nitpicking. If anyone here thinks they are superior human beings because of who they know, what school they attended, etc. etc.,that is their right to feel that way,but ,I personally do not give them the right to impose their smugness on me,nor will I accept it!When it is done to me,you can bet all your money that I will respond in kind and defend my personal honor to the best of my ability!
When I am wrong,I am quick to apologize sincerely!I feel that I might owe an apology to the forum for even getting into a ''slanging ''match.I'm not sure ,as I am not an experienced forum participant. But if there are individuals that attack me personally, you can bet your booties that I will not allow you that satisfaction at my expense.Never have and never will!As they say ''Up to you!!
