Re: Lao Railway Progress
Yes china is leading the world in fast track building projects in many countries now, but at what cost, alas the statistic of injuries and deaths along the way will never be revealed.

Re: Lao Railway Progress
Is this another example of: China setting ‘debt trap’ for developing nations with loans they CAN'T repay:
https://www.express.co.uk/finance/city/ ... a-DjiboutiCHINA has been accused of manipulating developing countries with cheap large loans so it can build a lucrative transport network across the world and become an even bigger economic power house.
Re: Lao Railway Progress
well, the Thais at least initially didn't get the "cheap" loans they wanted from the Chinese. The Thais also didn't roll over for the Chinese request/demand to have commercial rights along the railway. As I hear it, the Lao granted the Chinese 50 meters either side of the railway that's under construction for Chinese run commercial development and I think its a 50 year grant...

Re: Lao Railway Progress
"According to Mr Pichit, a first group of 76 Chinese engineers have undergone training and sat exams to test their understanding of Thai law and professional code of ethics as well as their engineering expertise. "
come on ...... NOBODY has any chance whatsoever of understanding Thai Law and professional code of ethics
Silly me ...... Rule No 1 ..... No poofte ......xx sorry
Rule No 1, pay the trainer the required sum to pass the test

Are you trying to tell us everything in Thailand is all a big charade?
No way! It can't be true!

Re: Lao Railway Progress
but the Chinese engineers must adhere to the requisite laws and regulations as they plan and build the new railway!! Frankly, I'd just like to see them "git er' done"... The Kingdom will suffer embarrassment if the Chinese up in Laos have that run finished from the Mekong all the way up to Kunming and all they have over here is a few kilometers of high speed to nowhere...

Re: Lao Railway Progress
Spending a few days in Bua Yai just off Route 2 at Sida north of Korat. Major works going on around the railway station...a new flyover at the level crossing on toad in from Sida and another flyover at opposite side of the town. Large area of land around the station cleared and levelled. Huge concrete slabs being poured and constructed and major works along the rail line going in the direction of Korat. Looks like Bua Yai is to be a major hub for the new rail line.

The last I read is that the Thai gov has downgraded the 'speed' aspect of any new railroad. If I were a bettin' man, I'd bet on the Lao portion to be well done......maybe even before the Thais get started. The SRT is going the way of the Panama railroad and dinosaurs.
Re: Lao Railway Progress
SRT still has plans for double tracking the one meter gauge rail all the way to Nong Khai. The pillars for an elevated track are built in most of Khon Kaen now and Khorat is doing the same. They're also planning a one meter rail link from south of KK to Sakon Nakon/NKP.
The Chinese engineered and built broad gauge "high speed railway" will get done in my opinion but indeed will not "kick start" until significant progress is made on the Boten-Vientiane rail line.. I honestly don't expect the Nong Khai to Bangkok "high speed" rail to take the four years the Lao rail will take in total. The terrain in Issan is far more conducive to putting in the line much quicker from an engineering standpoint. Far less bridges than Laos and probably just a few tunnels at the edge of the Khorat Plateau leading down towards Saraburi. I'm sure most hold up on this side of the Mekong will be administratively linked..

Chinese engineers asking Thai locals for directions could be a major stumbling block
Re: Lao Railway Progress
From a buddy of mine who was closely involved with the the project planning during the off-again, on-again negotiations between 2014 and 2016, the Thai's rejected the initial Chinese financing package that included exclusive commercial rights for 50 m either side of the tracks. The same deal that the Lao government rolled over on.FrazeeDK wrote: ↑January 14, 2018, 10:05 pmSRT still has plans for double tracking the one meter gauge rail all the way to Nong Khai. Despite being technically more challenging, the Lao bit would have been a relative breeze when it came to 'permitting' compared with Thailand where the line traverses mostly used and usable land with a much heavier population density. I am covering 2 projects in Myanmar at the moment and the really remote, mountainous, big one is moving on a lot faster than the smaller one that is working around farm land and townships nearer Yangon.

Re: Lao Railway Progress
Similar to Channel Tunnel Rail link in UK which used existing low speed lines and railway owned land in the London area before getting its own High speed section out in the Kent countryside.
