Since your OP has pulled a Lazarus on us, just out of interest, what did you end up doing all those years ago? Buying first or renting and buying later? Interested to know how that worked out as Udon was a lot quieter/smaller with less housing options 5 years ago.

I'm looking to move from Chiang Mai to Udon within the next 2 to 3 months and buying a new one level house. Did you check out gated communities when you were doing your search and can you recommend any I should consider when I come up in two weeks?

I live in a gated community now. It is on the Nong Khai road. It may not be your best bet due to prolonged construction on the main intersection. See my other post about possibly renting.
