Mick's House Build
Re: Mick's House Build
Ok, after a change of job and a bit of consolidation, I am ready to move on with the house.
After reading Barney's post, I thought I better get back on the forum as well.
We've been living in the house since January and all is going well.
The rain gutters are working fine and getting all the water away easily.
Unfortunately, I created at bird sanctuary with the roof structure and guttering, but I have since installed light galvanized wire to prevent the birds nesting which has fixed the problem.
As I have said on another thread, a couple of minor cracks otherwise all good.
In typical Thai style, not all doors fit well considering the change of seasons and a few other small problems for me to fix as well but nothing serious.
Will give me something to do while I'm here.
Family very happy with the result.
Maybe Us Falang are too fussy. Don't know?
Pictured is recent land fill for the outdoor living area.
This will be fully fenced, to try and keep out snakes, scorpions, dogs etc, and keep our dog in when we get one.
This area will have the pool, entrance to my (to be built) workshop and outdoor hut for wife's mum.
World Concrete are coming today to start to build perimeter walls and one wall for outdoor area.
I will post pics as they go along.

Re: Mick's House Build
Hi Mick. I know WC are doing a pile and plank wall for you, but do they do the more common Thai style poured column/beam variety of retaining wall as well? I am looking to get a team in as close as possible to December 24 - mine is not a big job; just about 75m all up, and height only 1 to 1.2 m. I'll throw this open to anyone out there who has had a good experience building this style of retaining wall - please post or PM me. Thanks for the space Mick.
Re: Mick's House Build
Ajarn,
I can't answer that for sure, as that was not what I was looking for.
I did have one of their flyers that showed lots of what they can do, and that was nearly everything from small jobs to high rises.
I'm sure they can do what you want, but best to call them.

Re: Mick's House Build
Yesterday a small crew arrived, (a day late), to clear some small trees from the fence line and mark out the dimentions, posts etc.
Today the excavator with auger arrived and drilling began.
All holes 2m deep and going OK.
Soil looks pretty good down there, actually.
Reminds me of council workers back in OZ.
1 workin' and 4 watchin'

Been a bit slow the last few days, but all holes drilled now and all posts onsite.
Started placing and leveling.
Expect the posts to be concreted in about Thursday.

Re: Mick's House Build
Mick, for the Post and Plank fence what is the cost per meter??? We've got a mini-estate planned right next to our land plot and a 1.5 or 2 meter plank wall would provide a level of privacy the current chain link fence does not...

Good luck pouring the posts mate. This is where all those council workers come into their own. Holding the post straight, hopefully, while the concrete dries.mickojak wrote:Been a bit slow the last few days, but all holes drilled now and all posts onsite.

Nice to visit today Mick. Thanks for the royal tour, with coffee and your own homemade cheese cake. House looks good and the fence guys are moving well with the posts.
Can't believe how good the breeze was from your ceiling fans.

Re: Mick's House Build
Progress slow but steady, Thai style.
Yesterday, I though the crew just sat around all day and did nothing, but in the evening, I realized that they had been mixing a couple of buckets of hand slurry concrete and pouring into each hole and setting the poles level etc.
This morning the concrete truck turned up and filled the holes up more.
Apparently in a couple of days they are digging the first horizontal section into the ground to sit closer to the concrete footing.
Will be interesting.
Funny thing is they poured the concrete into a big bucket then hand poured it down the holes.
Don't know why they did not just pour it straight from the chute on the truck?
But that's Thailand.
Probably do a few people out of a job?????

Re: Mick's House Build
As anticipated, the crew dug down to the concrete footing to lay the fist sections.
Coming along nicely now.
Sure is a lot of handwork with his wall, but looking good to me.

Looks a quality job Mick
Re: Mick's House Build
The reason is to maintain the concrete strength. A similar approach would be to run to concrete from the chute down a "slide" made from say, a scrap piece of corrogated iron roofing or similar.mickojak wrote: Funny thing is they poured the concrete into a big bucket then hand poured it down the holes.

What size are those posts - hard to guage just from the pics - are they 20 x 20 cms?

Re: Mick's House Build
I have the same type of wall as Mick. I believe that is where he got the idea from. My poles are 15x15cm. According to instructions these poles should be hammered down to solid ground, not rest in a small puddle if concrete. But of course this way is easier and cheaper for the builder. Let us hope this wall will be strong enough anyhow.
