Month of October
Re: Month of October
There will be a ceremony at the "cremation site" set up at Tungsrimeuang beginning at 07:30 16 Oct.
https://www.facebook.com/ud.city1/
For the next 10 days, if you're trying to stay away from traffic, I'd avoid the area from the post office to Ngeesoon and from Makkaeng to Nongprajak as I'd expect daily entourages will arrive at the site to pay their final respects. On the 26th, there are special provisions for far-away parking for the masses who will pay their respects at the same time as the ceremony in Bangkok. If you don't like traffic, this would be a good place to avoid.
If you want to view any of these ceremonies, I'd suggest long black pants and black shirt and shoes.

https://coconuts.co/bangkok/news/breaki ... of-oct-26/BREAKING: 7-Elevens nationwide to close on afternoon of Oct. 26
If you live in Thailand, you know that one thing is certain. 7-Eleven never closes. On Oct. 26, that will change.
All 10,000 branches of the ubiquitous convenience store will close on that Thursday afternoon in order to mourn the death of late an individual Adulyadej and observe the royal cremation, CP All announced this afternoon.
7-Eleven, which traditionally remains open 24/7 and never closes under any circumstance, will close their doors at 2:30pm on the 26th and reopen at midnight.
CP All will also shut down its CP Freshmart grocery stores from 3pm of the cremation day. The stores will reopen at 6am on Oct. 27.
Re: Month of October
http://www.nationmultimedia.com/detail/ ... s/30329577KFC outlets to close for royal cremation
KFC outlets across the country will be closed on October 26 from 3pm in deference to the cremation rites for His Majesty the late an individual Adulyadej.
Management and staff of KFC Thailand, Yum Restaurants International (Thailand) and franchise partners Central Restaurant Group and Restaurant Development will be joining other citizens in paying respects to the late monarch.
Outlets at Tesco Lotus markets will close at 2pm and KFC Delivery service will stop taking orders at 1.30pm.
KFC restaurants and Delivery will resume operations as usual on October 27.
KFC management said it “fully supports” employees participating in royal cremation ceremonies taking place around the country on October 26.
I think it is now safe to say that there will not be much open on Thursday 26th. October afternoon. Although no one has yet officially said so, I believe that will apply to bars as well.
How/If an alcohol ban will be extended to other than the 26th. is still very much an unanswered question though!!

Re: Month of October
I think it is a good idea that most of Thailand shutdown. I often spoke to my GF about what would happen when an individual would pass away. We are now seeing it. Full tradition should be followed and if that involves a total shut down then so be it to allow people to complete their mourning process. The occasion should not be weakened by allowing life to go on as normal.
Something we in the western world have allowed to happen by having shops pubs restaurants open and operate 24/7 where once a day off was compulsory. Christmas being one.

Re: Month of October
Personally I wouldn't disagree Barney.
It is the lack of a bit of forethought & planning that annoys me though.
The authorities have been preparing for this event for over a year now.
A clear, concise message about exactly what was expected of all sectors over the mourning period could have been announced 6 months ago & everyone could make plans accordingly.
Instead we will probably have the normal police/army going around bars the night of the 25th. saying you can't open tomorrow!!

Re: Month of October
On one of the Udon community websites there is a list of volunteers for the 26 Oct ceremony at Tungsrimeuang. The list of names is 406 pages long......I stopped looking after I reached 5000.......and many more were there.
There ceremony will begin in the early morning and last until night..........I'd expect crowds and traffic probably anywhere within a km of the ceremony location. All the big league players....Robinson's, 7-11, Lotus, etc have announced either reduced hours or closed for the day.....so, unless you're coming to town for the ceremony, it'd be a good day to relax at home or visit the countryside.
I haven't seen anything in the press about post-26 Oct.....but will post it if I do.

Re: Month of October
Well just going on things my wife is involved in. Monday 23rd representatives of all outside Udon amphoes are attending a formally dressed ceremony in town, midday onwards to collect a sacred flame to take back to their respective areas ready for the symbolic cremation ceremony held locally . So Monday afternoon is going to be busy around Tungsri Muang. Bare in mind it is also Rama VI day as well with it's traditional early morning ceremony's so the whole day is spoken for .
Tuesday 24th all amphoes will be holding rehearsals and training sessions ,involving for our relatively small area of Nong Wau So, over 10,000 registered volunteers, so you can guess it will be big in town that day too.Wednesday 25th rehearsals all day, followed by the big one on the 26th with the burning actually taking place at 4pm but expected to be things happening all day from early morn .
I do have the official programme for Udon but of course it's in Thai so will do my best to send it for John(Parrot) to interpret on here .
Ageing is a privilige denied to many .
Re: Month of October
Val's schedule is for the 26th........activities from 0600 to 2200 hours. It would be an opportunity to see how many government employees there are in Udon province, as I'd expect most all to be there, along with thousands of volunteers to smooth the way.
Still nothing in the Udon press about any impact post 26th.

Re: Month of October
Public urged to not drink during Royal Cremation period
Next I guess there will be the old unofficial recommendation to the Governors...The Disease Control Department has urged people to refrain from drinking alcoholic drinks for the five days of the Royal Cremation period to make merit for His Majesty the late an individual Adulyadej.
Doctor Suwannachai Wattanayingcharoenchai, director general of the department, sent a letter to the government’s Public Relations Department asking them to help get out a message discouraging people from drinking from October 25 to 29.
The letter to the PR department’s director general, Lt-General Sansern Kaewkamnerd, suggested the NBT channel run public service announcements discouraging drinking for the period.

http://www.khaosodenglish.com/news/2017 ... nt-banned/Public Discouraged From Drinking But Booze Won’t Be Banned
Bit of a quick backtrack there!!......Asadang added that the Alcohol Control Board, which regulates booze sales, will not issue any ban on alcohol consumption or sales during the royal cremation ceremony. The cremation is set to take place on Oct. 26.
However, nightlife is expected to go dark, as a growing number of businesses have announced they’d shut their doors Thursday, which has also been declared a public holiday by the government.....
I am surprised that he appears to be saying that alcohol sales are not banned on the 26th., although I am guessing it might be difficult to find many places open..

No backtracking. The initial request was for abstinence but never mentioned any formal bans on consumption. The alcohol sales restrictions are probably ready to be officially announced in the next 24 hours, if not already.BobHelm wrote: ↑October 23, 2017, 1:34 pmhttp://www.khaosodenglish.com/news/2017 ... nt-banned/Public Discouraged From Drinking But Booze Won’t Be Banned

Some people on the 'big forum' took off like a bottle rocket on the initial 'refrain from drinking alcohol' statement and were suggesting that because they witnessed locals stocking up on all sorts of bulk booze purchases that they are either not as pious as we are led to believe or know something we don't. Some 'experts' even suggested that booze will probably be banned forever after the main event. I think it's more like the new liquor tax regimen will officially kick-in after the official cremation and coronation ceremonies, in early November.
FWIW, a few of my friends with bars and restaurants in Pattaya opted to close ALL this week ahead of all this uncertainty and some have gone on overseas holidays. With loads of people leaving Bangkok for the provinces, it's a bit like a mini-Songkran on the roads apparently.

Puts the correct emphasis on the whole affair. This is a big deal for Thailand with all those countries showing due respect with the presence of some very important dignitaries does show the importance he had on the Thai society and perhaps the world stage.
No need now to worry if you can get a Chang or Achar during the event.
