well there's the "law" and then there are various interpretations of it along with selective enforcement.. Do all the Udon foreign Police volunteers have Work Visas? Or is that overlooked because they're volunteering with the Police? Technically that Farang cleaning out the klong near the mall a few weeks ago was "working". He made the national news yet I've heard nothing about Immigration going after him.. Technically when I've done cleanup work at our local temple and park I reckon I was in violation of the law but all I got from Thais was a big smile and thumbs up as they drove by (not stopping to do a lick of work of course
To qualify for a work permit the minimum wage I think is 40k per month. Volunteer work is just that and not related in any way to a work permit, don't confuse the two. I think maybe you just wanted a pat on the back and regocnition of your good deeds
Minimum requirements by law .... a salary of 50K pcm to work with a work permit ... it rose from 40k last year , you actually come out 46,500 after tax

9. Foreigners entering Thailand are not permitted to work, regardless of their types of visa, unless they are granted a work permit. Those who intend to work in Thailand must hold the correct type of visa to be eligible to apply for a work permit. Information on Work Permit applications could be obtained from the website of the Office of Foreign Workers Administration, Department of Employment, Ministry of Labour

Correct, and the only two visa's that allow you to get a work permit are a Non-B and O visa.

Don’t worry about tomorrow. Today is terrifying enough.
I never forget a face, but in your case I can do an exception.

I applied for my Non O visa in Glasgow in October, at the same time my friend applied for his in Birmingham.
At the time the web sites stated that proof of income 65k baht per month was required, but neither of us were asked for this on application.
The only difference between the 2 locations is Birmingham asked for a translated copy of marriage certificate but Glasgow didn't.

Out of curiosity I contacted the London consul and again was told no proof of income was required despite the website clearly stating otherwise.

If you are saying that you can legally do volunteer work without a work permit, then you are not correct. Legally a work permit is needed for any work paid or not, voluntary or contractual.

However the enforcement of the law is always a matter for the local officials, who may choose to have a broad or narrow view, sometimes common sense does come into play.

In my posts all fees and requirements are the standard R&R but TIT and a brown envelope can make incredible changes YMMV.

As one who has been doing unpaid voluntary work of some sort or another for the last ten years in Udon I can tell you my experience . First you must qualify for a work permit, that means being on a marriage visa not retirement, then the dept that wants you to help them registers you for a WP waiver, this is only valid for helping the named dept, it is not transferable .I understand this is applicable to the volunteer police as well . although I have no personal experience of this .
Ageing is a privilige denied to many .

"is it okay if I hang around my wife's restaurant "
My friend was carrying in groceries and supplies from Makro, to his wife's registered restaurant approx. 6 months ago ?

Busted by Immigration for NO WORK PERMIT. legally married etc

Fined 20,000 with receipts

Probably dobbed in by a jealous rival, but all the same charges laid and fined.
