Nice apartments very close to UD Town

Post by vincemunday » February 15, 2019, 9:49 am

My wife has an apartment free that would suit a student or someone working in town, if you have a son or daughter coming to board in town these are a great place for them to stay. The apartments are well equipped, air conditioned, have a small kitchen and free wifi etc. There are on site slot washing, water and top up machines. The monthly rent is 3500 baht and there is a 3500 baht deposit, residents are responsible for their own metered electricity and water. Please note she does not rent to Farang.

So, as a Farang, I would not be considered an acceptable tenant for your wife's room.

She wouldn't let me stay there, but she would let my student step-daughter stay there - and then happily take my money to pay the rent.

I'll be surprised if you find anyone daft enough to stand for that.

Not knowing Vincemunday, Bough it may well be that the accommodation offered specialises in young (youthful) Thai students/employees etc and the last thing that caring parents would want is an unknown aging falang as a boarder in the same complex. Whilst this is profiling of sorts, the original contributor made it abundantly clear that the accommodation offered had a fence around it. No need to get your knickers in a knot, caring parents will be thrilled the landlord has their children's welfare at heart. my

This is Thailand you can discriminate when you hire, or in deciding whom you want to rent to. There are no repercussions.Get used to it. Besides Vince probably doesn't want the competition......just kidding Vinnie \:D/

Maybe Falangs are more trouble than they are worth....immigration, copies of blue book, landlord having to be involved...etc

You've made some fair points which I'll try and answer.
I'll just mention firstly that the last time I talked with Vince we blethered for so long out in the open that I ended up with a mild sunburn. Despite that, :D I have no axe to grind with him.

Why wouldn't a caring parent want an ageing farang in the complex?
I suspect you're thinking about some creepy old alcoholic leering at the students. It's understandable, I've seen more than a few here over the years.
However, I've also met a couple of decent men who've been laid low by bad luck/bad women and just needed some time in cheap housing to help get themselves back on track. If they're not even granted the basic decency of an interview to show that their presence might be a potential benefit to the area, both sides could be losing out.

Statistically, who do you think my daughter should be more wary of? The ageing farang who might keel over with a heart attack if he chased her for more than 10 metres, or the testosterone filled young buck in the next room who can't stop thinking about her? I can (just about) remember being in lust as a young man. It's a major test of self control.

There was a government sponsored report a few years ago that claimed 59% of reported rape victims were students. 31% of attackers were either fellow students or employees. I am not suggesting that the apartment complex is unsafe - I'm sure Vince would have good security there - but I don't think any parent knowing those figures would believe arbitrarily excluding farangs is something to be thrilled about. It bears no relevance to the actual situation.

The ban didn't just apply to old farangs, though, did it?
The twentysomething English teacher who is one of the most pleasant people I know in Udon? - not allowed.
The young South African woman I knew in pre-Tsunami Phuket who used to give free English Conversation lessons to the Thais in her apartment block? - not allowed.

Both of those people would be an asset to any community they stayed in. You could probably come up with similar examples yourself.

I am probably too equanimous to get my knickers in a knot about anything, but I'll stand by what I wrote.
Advertising on a farang forum that your wife doesn't want farangs renting her property is unlikely to be a successful tactic.

Oh dear Bouph, you have got yourself into bit of a lather haven't you! But you're quite right, as a Farang you wouldn't be allowed and it's nothing to do with anyone being creepy alcoholics but more to do with the licensing laws. At the moment we are registered as student accommodation and that gives my wife a different tax rate to regular accommodation and this is partly why she can offer her rooms so cheaply. Should she start taking in Farang residents she needs to change the license, pay more tax and start reporting to immigration, something else she doesn't want to get involved in. The ad works because people who live out in Khumawhapi or Khon Kaen for example like their kids to be somewhere clean and tidy while they're at uni. I don't remember the said conversation but it's unusual for me to stand in the sun, I normally run for shade.

Oh dear, Vince, you have got yourself into a bit of a lather trying to clear this up haven't you?
Opening your reply with blatant condescension is only an effective tool if you can demonstrate superiority over the person you're debating with.

As NTVL correctly pointed out, your wife is free to rent her property to anyone she wants. I have no problem accepting that it is for valid economic and administrative reasons, as you're now telling us.

Since you didn't initially make that clear, it also might have been because she hates farangs.

The end result is the same to your wife - no farangs - but I wouldn't want my girl staying with a racially prejudiced landlady. I think most responsible parents would feel the same.

If you had put a straightforward "We are registered as student accommodation" instead of the more contentious "She does not rent to Farang", I wouldn't have bothered to comment.

I'd have a different question, though.

You're registered as student accommodation but you're willing to rent to "someone working in town" - i.e. not a student. Would it be more accurate to describe it (as Trekkertony wrote) as being for "young students/employees"?

If my girl is living in a 6 room complex with 5 other students, as "student accommodation" implies, I won't be too concerned about the arrangement.
If it turns she could possibly be living in a 6 room complex with 2 other students, 2 factory workers and 1 young collector for an illegal money lender, it's not the same situation.
It would be remiss of me not to discover that before letting her stay there.

And clearly you're a hugely unsuccessful proof-reader.

Perhaps your pal will be along to help out by telling you to "Leave it - 'e ain't worth it".

Mate. ;)

Bough, quoting the village idiot isn't the best thing you've ever done, he's respected up there with Giggle, how can my wife hate Farang? It may have escaped your notice but she's married to one! We live in a university town, most of the students there also work, quite a few in UD Town actually and I would say that sums up about 50% of the people who live in her apartments, another 10 - 20% work in local hotels and as for your comments about illegal money lenders, i despair I really do, drug dealers too no doubt but do you think they'll confess to you?

"Oh don't send your girl here mate, I'm a drug dealer"

I've rarely come across so much twaddle in a post and you're right of course you really aren't and now the penny's dropped, you're the chap in the Thanadorn swimming pool that day, you've met my wife which makes your comments even more ridiculous, I'm pretty sure your wife will tell what a nice girl she is that's if she didn't at the time. Strangely I had you down as quite a nice bloke, how people change once they're behind a keyboard eh?

Anyway, back to the thread, if anyone has a son or daughter coming into town for the new term these apartments really are worth considering, they're well maintained and they're close enough to UD Town that if they are going to work there it's not too far to travel home after. We also allow the deposit to be split over three months and charge water and electricity at utility company rates.

Thanks DuiDui, despite the rather nasty insinuations from Bough, my wife is a truly nice person and I've been fortunate to be married to her for 13 years. She tries to help out where she can, she realises that some farmers etc can't afford to pay 7000 baht in one lump so she splits the deposit to help them out, sometimes over more than 3 months. The kids all call her mum and she looks after them like a parent when needs be, running them to hospital after bike accidents and mending the odd broken heart, if I was a parent of a kid living on their own in town I'd be happy if my kids found apartments like Fa's.
