No need for Licenses after January

Post by Doodoo » December 17, 2018, 5:38 pm

"Digital Age!": No longer necessary to have a Thai driving license with you from January

This what they are saying
If you have a smartphone that is all you will need

Wait and see what the issues will be

My smartphone does not have my photo or ID details on it so what good will that do. I often take the wifes phone if I go out and she is staying at home so thats bound to confuse them

Hmm.

Lots of things decrim'd or subverted these days all over the world.

Who is saying this? Funny, at a Police check yesterday, they asked me for my license... not a smart phone.

I guess the downside of 2019 is the apparent inability to post links any more.

I've a few concerns about growing older.........#1 on the list is not to become a grumpy old guy. Close at number 2 is not to be overtaken by technology. Memories of when I first arrived in Udon in 96, met an American who had been here for several years and was having issues with the Social Security office. I asked him about the status. He told me he had written them and inquired........"and when was that?" I asked. He told me about 6 months ago......he was still waiting for a reply. He had heard about email.....but didn't have a computer, didn't know how to use one, and didn't have the foggiest idea about the internet. My challenge is trying to figure out what tech I need and what I don't. I've known a few guys in recent years who said they didn't need a smart phone....then got one.....and there's no turning back. I have my Makro card, my Robinson's/Tops card, my S&P and MK cards on my smartphone....along with my passport/visa pages and license photos, I can do show-and-tell with any Thai merchant if I'm looking for a certain product, I haven't used a paper map in years to navigate even the most remote school or village, I haven't carried a pocketful of to-do notes in years.......and on and on. If I were to forget my wallet, I could survive for several days with Samsungpay purchases. I hardly use the phone features of my smartphone........using LINE for calls throughout Thailand, Italy, US, England.....all for free. I have no need for a "I've fallen and I can't get up" gadget dangling around my neck. If I accidentally flush my phone down the toilet, I know I can buy a cheap enough smart phone and almost instantly have access to all my phone numbers/emails/photos/notes, no matter where I am in Thailand (or the world). I could survive without an ATM, microwave, refrigerator, TV, tablet, internet, running water, a fresh change of undies, my truck, a western sit-down toilet, my bowl of noodle soup or my smartphone.........but why would I want to do that? Meanwhile, my friend, had he not died, might still be waiting for a reply from Social Security.

Good stuff, thanks. Gradually the mechanisms are being installed that will make the driver more trackable and accountable such as unmanned speed cameras, traffic tickets in the mail and eventually a points system. Still won't make them more responsible though. Do it the old school way and have police catch, ticket or arrest the bad drivers in the act. First phase of the punishment should be the removal of all window tint so that other twunt drivers can see what a proper twunt looks like. All I ever see the Highway Police do here is pull over suss lorries, block intersections whenever 'you know who' is out shopping and run escort services for boy scouts on a jamboree. They don't even show up when there's been a major prang and just leave it to the 'emergency services' provided by the rescue foundations.

Anyone replaced their Thai DL since September 2017 and check if there's a QR code on the back side? My license doesn't expire until the end of 2020 so no rush to change it just so I can load another app on my phone.

The penalty for not having your license "with you at the moment" is the same as the penalty for "not having a license at all." It's a comedy show.

Farang need not apply. Will not be accepted at this stage. Something to do with identity using our passports.
