the "noise rule" which supposedly is "law" is to shutdown the music at 11PM on weekdays and Midnight on weekends.. Last year in our neck of the woods they actually seemed to follow that pretty much.. But, application of the rule would likely depend on who is giving the party/wedding/funeral, their connections and if the Cops are invited. Aside from the seasonal parties/wedding/funerals blaring away, those folks out on the east side near Ban Nong Sai have the privilege of being entertained by the famous Luk Thung singer "Nok Noi" (now in her late 60's I believe) who puts on huge concerts with numerous bands in her home village there.. Those fetes usually last through the night.. I live at least 3-4km from the place and the bass boom boom boom is still annoying..

It is a Thai thing for sure, I have been to some events where it was so loud I could not think. No one could talk to each other and the noise was actually painful for me. The Thais do enjoy it though. It is their party.

Early on, about 10 years ago, had a rental in a close neighborhood. One night the music next door was so loud you could feel it, windows shaking, thought I saw cracks forming in the walls. They weren't even having a party, just listening I guess, 2 or 3 Thai guys. The wife and I just went over and asked them to turn it down which they did. The wife may have said a few things that I didn't understand, but there was never a problem after that.

I've done the same with two of my neighbors over the years and they were very quick to wai me and turn the music down. I've tried to understand their way of thinking and I don't think they realize how the sound carries through the neighborhood. If ever I turn my music on I will go out into the street to listen to the volume, and if I sense that it might be annoying to another then I go back inside and turn it down. Question is...why don't the Thais do that? Is it because they just don't care or are they so used to being selfish and only putting themselves first and foremost with no regard for others that the thought never occurs to them to consider the privacy/peace of their neighbors?

A few years ago I had a long talk with one of my neighbors about his barking dogs and he was very apologetic and took the dogs away for a week, but then he brought them back and acted as though we never had the conversation. To this day he refuses to acknowledge me if we pass on the street. I guess I'll never understand these buggers!

Inconveniencing others, making them go around, double parking, deafening advertising trucks, dumping sand for construction projects in the street, never using turn indicators, unannounced water/electric outages, loud music at private parties, blocking off streets for funerals/weddings, commandeering public sidewalks for personal use, irritating others with preposterous village announcements and music -- all of these things and many more examples are merely projections of power. It's the same reason schools can't let parents know when summer break will begin, even in the week before -- schools are determined to project power over the parents. Banks do it, parking attendants do it, the military does it, police do it ... In a society where citizens are reticent to make direct confrontation, hundreds of incremental projections of power, like playing loud music, help establish who has power over who. It also helps blur the lines between real authority and perceived authority.

Thai's passive-aggressive approach to power is evident every day in many manifestations. The jumped-up mall security guard, complete with radio, cuffs, and heel-clickers on his boots is perhaps the most comical power projector.

and.. it could be that some folks be they playing music or the Temple with a loud PA system just love to project their music or voice throughout the extended neighborhood, because.. they can... Perhaps a convoluted way of gaining "face" by inundating the area with 130 decibels of noise letting all know that their party, or their announcement means something...

Sorry, get used to the noise. The Thais love noise. Huge cracked vibrating speakers with bass that tingles your ears. As long as it is loud, they like it. You are simply going to have to live with it. My wife criticizes me for complaining so I no longer complain.

The noise doesn't bother me near as badly as the reckless blatant disregard for the peace of the neighbors just so a handful of drunk Thai males can stay up all night to demonstrate their manhood by out drinking their buddies. In the case of small parties they are only disturbing their local neighbors, but when the big concerts kick off they keep thousands of people in the surrounding communities annoyed all night long. And by the way, I don't believe that the Thais enjoy that kind of noise. Everyone I know just hates the noise but they don't have the balls to say anything about it for fear of experiencing a "beat down". What person in their right mind would stay up all night long until daylight getting drunk? Don't these people have to work the following day, or do they just all call in sick? No wonder there are so many traffic fatalities in Thailand. After midnight half the people on the roads are drunk. What a totally screwed up society!

My house is off the main road and there was some land between me and the road which i wanted to buy but someone bought it first and built this jerrybuilt building to make coffins . He cuts the cheap ply with a circular saw mostly on weekends and hollidays as he is a teacher .It is very loud and about 20 mts from my house .
A few years ago i went with my wife to speak (politely ) to him about not making a noise on xmas afternoon which was a sunday that year as i was having friends round for xmas dinner . He told my to go and live somewhere else . A couple of days later he got some builders to take part of his wall down to make it louder as in the photo. His wall was also built against my small border wall and is now pushing it down .
I remember a few years before sitting next to him at a teachers dining out (my wife is a teacher)and when he reached for food i could see he was carrying a gun , i asked him why and he said he wanted to shoot someone , also found out the head and another teacher had guns at a restaurant , all drinking whisky . never went again .
I listen to morlum from parties ,the temple about 300 mtrs away worst of all when someone dies they leave that insane beat going on a loop for 3 days . I usually stay in udon then but i never complain to them but when i play some loud rock music (never after 8pm) the ask me to turn it down . Not because its loud just they do not like the music

My Thai wife asks me why I get angry when Thai people are having a good time. She thinks that I am jealous and selfish because I am not able to enjoy it. As mentioned before, I no longer complain. Long ago I was told NOT to concern myself with things I have no control over.

I was thinking exactley same Tamada although I was in town and not disturbing my neighbours I have found the best solution is to go drink with the Thai lads but have them drink at our pace none of this making one bottle last 12 hours then they are all passed out within an hour music off go to bed
