This is an accident spot just waiting to happen, no bets on how long that lamp post will last.

The narrowing of the outer lane to make room for a turning lane will make some interesting moments in the dark when people are along a big truck. The inside lane is made wider at the spots but who sees that and who will swerve left to follow that, especially when it is dark?

Bearing in mind that very few locals will use the left hand lane, I would give it 2 days at most before someone takes off over the kerb into a lamp post. This photo should be printed all over the world to show some of the idiocy we encounter.

Villagers are up in arms about the highway....enough to get the attention of the government. With Songkran traffic, the potential for accidents is increased...even more.

It is unfortunate that the Thai mindset and lack of personal mental risk assessment makes them lazy to just turn left and go up the road and then U-turn and come back legally, hence, as we all see and experience they just turn right and go back against the oncoming traffic, day or night in any vehicle. Installing more U-turn access ways on a highway or main road just makes sense to them.
This particular photo seems to also be on a rise further adding to the lack of vision of oncoming vehicles. There will also be many who will come back against the traffic to use this U-turn section. Further adding to the danger.
The Thais who live in villages which are cut by main roads and highways still ride their bikes and cars as though they are in the village centre with no thought of the speed of others flying through. We have all seen man made crossings, usually through deep drains made on highways for local bikes to get from one side to the other, heaven forbid you go up a kilometer in a legal and safe fashion to turn back.

Not sure whats going to happen but the Udon governor and heads from Amphur NWS inspected the road this morning and all agreed it is highly dangerous and have instructed a team get out and paint warning stripes on the road today to prevent carnage over the Songkran period .The long term policy is to widen the road at the U turn junctions but another problem was put forward by locals including monk organisations, of the difficulty for pedestrians crossing the road, having to clamber over the central barriers or walk miles to find a gap to cross .I personally have noticed a marked increase in the number of both motor bikes and cars travelling against the traffic flow rather than go a long way to do a U turn. The road "designer" is reported as saying he has built similar systems elsewhere without problem.Maybe that was before the advent of social media as this is all over it now. :-"

Great remedy. Warning stripes on the road will surely solve the problems. Not to mention help changing the mindset of vehicle drivers.

It's a pity you can't buy shares in nong wua so hospital business is about to boom around here.fast lane tailgaters are going to get caught out when to vehicle in front pulls to the left and leaves a nasty surprise for him behind.i travel this road daily and find now it's best just to drive along in the slow lane and watch some of the nutters do their stunt driving.

Slow lane? Which do you consider being that? A lot of the slow nitwits here use the right lane. Probably they are afraid of the grass on the side of the road.

It's been very dangerous at night during the construction phase as there's been no lighting.

Maybe a 60 kph speed limit should be imposed while they rework the design

Yes I know what you are saying and I only said slow lane as we farang know it.i think fast lane, slow lane, left or right, green, red light is a bit taxing to many Thai.theres been a few deaths on that stretch of road over the last year or so including a couple of teachers from the school i seem to remember.lets see what goes on this year.i think we will see a few head ons from ghost riders with no lights.i hate driving at night and the back road are even worse with no street lighting.makes me laugh how here we must have a Thai license and Thai can drive on uk roads without a uk license.my pals wife had over 50 lessons in the he uk and just gave it up as a bad idea.i would like to see the pass rate of Thais taking a uk motorbike test.in fact I would say there's not one Thai in this country with a uk bike license.

Well we got the stripes. Don't think that makes it any less dangerous though.

Crikey! That looks like it's actually designed to launch cars into the air and my guess is there's a distinct possibility that's what will happen. My word, that's scary.
The forest was shrinking daily but the trees kept voting for the axe as its handle was made of wood and they thought it was one of them.

You are right. I fear we will see some flying vehicles. Could be real nasty.

Non Wau So as a province is bigger than Udon in size and population, although it's difficult to get actual figures of resident farang it is estimated by the issue of yellow books etc that there are as many here as in Udon , note I said resident .These mainly consist of Swedes and Germans but there is a smattering of most nationalities as well .On the whole these are married guys on moderate income who whilst still liking a drink and socialising with others, prefer to do so without spending too much, so they tend to gather at selected homes where they drink from cans bought from the local supermarket. I guess the ones you saw were at the table outside the 7-11, over the road there is a farang run pizza place selling quite nice ones at 100bht, he is doing well apparently. I suppose the thought process is , why pay the higher prices charged in town when you can enjoy your mates chat and eat and drink just round the corner , after all a small Leo is less than 30bht, why pay twice as much in town?

You're not kidding! That has to be the most dangerous thing I've seen to date, a car hitting that at 60kmph could be caterpulted a long way up, I wouldn't want to be in the car alongside them!

It will launch a car the same as in the James Bond film car chase where roger does a twisted flip over the river...also noticed no drain hole under concrete central barrier.so the rain will sit in the road and we will see lots of aqua planing going on.

They make a TV program a few years ago about farrang in Nongwuasoh. In amphur have the highest rate of farrang married to thai women...per capita!
