Now What? (American Politics)
Why is Obama considered to be the first black american president when he is half white? Why not the first half white or the first half black president? Or more correct the first mulatto president if in fact he is. When Tiger Woods made the golf scene he was aked if he considered himself black american, asian american, or black asian? His reply was he considered himself an American
Now What? (American Politics)
Obama dealt with that issue and hasn't bothered with it since. Those from or still clinging to the days when segregation was the norm or who continue to make it a reason or an issue will continue to do so. The facts are that it is 2012, MOST of America is over it, and as those fogies continue to die off in increasing numbers, the rest of America will get over it.
Until fairly recently, my 21 year old nephew thought of it as I think of slavery - something that happened, but isn't around anymore. When he was exposed to it, we celebrated. Why? Because he was 21 before he ever blatantly encountered it. But guess what? It wasn't in America. It was here in Thailand after finishing up soldiering in Iraq. So, my glass is raised to not only Obama and what he represents, but to all my fellow TRUE Americans who made him and my nephew's experience (or lack thereof) possible.

Why is Obama considered to be the first black american president when he is half white?
If his picture were shown to 100 people BEFORE he ran for POTUS (and they didn't know who he was) and they were asked "what is the race of the person in this photo".......100 people would say "black". It's that simple, he LOOKS black so he is considered black.
Obama was elected because: (1) he got a high percentage of the vote from 'persons of color'
(2) the economic crash started during the Republican watch
If the unemployment figures stay roughly the same (or get better) he will be re-elected.

Another relevant test - had he been around then, what part of the bus would Obama have sat in during 1954 in Montgomery, Alabama?

Just to be clear. When I posted this it was NOT about race. It was about class warfare and the division of the rich and the working class.

I get another chuckle when I hear Republican supporters claiming Obama is promoting class warfare and such. In the breath (or should I say news cycle) before that charge, I recall them claiming he's a socialist. Which is it? lol! In theory, those who support unbridled capitalism - as claimed by the GOP - should SUPPORT division of the classes as that is the consequence of a small government society based upon capitalism...
GOP supporters: Pick a side. Not all sides. Well...unless you are Mitt Romney. lol!

When are you going to respond to this statement you made, millions vote based upon LOOKS, Obama votes???merchant seaman wrote:Well KHONDAHM we can actually agree on something, Obama got elected because of the way he looks. Thank you for explaining that to all the members.KHONDAHM wrote:YAY!!! If precedent is anything to go by, then Newt should be the Republican nominee for President. Yessssssss!
He doesn't have a snowball's chance in Hell's microwave of winning in the General Election! Go Newt, go!
Mitt would have been the better worse choice because his Ken doll looks are 'sorta Presidential' and (I'm embarrassed to say) there are lots of American voters - millions - who vote based upon LOOKs.
Now What? (American Politics)
He did get a high percentage of the vote from minorities, but that wasn't why he was elected. Minorities only make up approximately 30% of the entire US population. Blacks and Hispanics are only about 26%. Minorities could not possibly have elected Barack Obama by themselves. White people had to have voted for him in large number for him to have won in 2008.LoveDaBlues wrote:Obama was elected because: (1) he got a high percentage of the vote from 'persons of color'
If he loses in 2012, it won't be because white people suddenly didn't like his skin color. It will be because he has had a record of failure.

Why in the heck would I ever respond to a statement I made? I made the statement. No response from me is required. Perhaps you argue with yourself, but I most certainly do not argue with myself.

At this point in time, I know what I'm marking on my secret ballot.

Back on topic: Why oh why would the GOP ever think the Southern Strategy still works in the year 2012? Because the people running the show are stuck in a bygone era. The stances they have taken on issues such as immigration is a gimme for the Democrats. All the Demos need to do is educate the Latinos about what the GOP has been doing TO them and not FOR them and then get them to the polls. Same goes for the GOP's silly stances and legislation aimed at women's reproductive issues and birth control. It's 2012. Trying to slog to a win on a bygone platform of guns, gays, or gynecology won't work. The only thing the GOP could even hope to win on would be the economy, but they haven't presented any plan anywhere near viable. They either want to increase taxes on the majority of the electorate or they want to gut programs benefitting the majority of the electorate. Why? Because Obama has included their best reasonable ideas as compromises in the budget recently presented. The fever pitch anti-anything-Obama leaves them with nothing viable to present. The ideas they were FOR are already in his budget; and by doing so, Obama took all their ammo with which they might have been able to attack him on. It was a brilliant move. When debate time comes around, Obama just needs to point to his budget which the GOP is sure to not pass and say "It's in there."

I know you said that in jest. They've roadblocked virtually every program to get our economy back on its feet over the past 4 years. Their economic policies are the single issue that would keep me from voting Republican. Not that there's any shortage of other issues, but Republican economic policies are at the top of the list.

Most likely at the back of the bus; however, it really depended on the temperament of the driver, the attitude and colour of the passengers, etc. But, it would have been a very bold black person who intentionally tried to sit up near the driver or beside a white woman in Montgomery.jackspratt wrote:Another relevant test - had he been around then, what part of the bus would Obama have sat in during 1954 in Montgomery, Alabama?
The same attitude probably applied most everywhere in the U.S.A. at that time whether in Alabama, Mississippi, Ohio or Indiana.

From the issues and positions you listed, it sounded like 'the Middle America Strategy' or those views held by many people in states like Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Ohio, Indiana, etc. not to mention the Dakotas, Montana, Utah, Wyoming and so on.
Give credit where credit is due, not just to the South.

Now apart from the race card which is a dead duck as far as I can ascertain, we now have the card that is raised by the R epublicans about Contraception.
When do Amnericans ( those with a brain ) realise that it is a womans right to decide what she is doing with her body not some religious bashing political party that decides whether or not she has a baby.
I agree that in some cases religion does pay a part in deciding about contraception ( like the Catholics although in the main many turn a blind eye to that ) , these days with the ever increasing cost of bringing up children to foist upon a woman the legal ramifications of going against what her party believes in about contraception just feels a rule/law too far.
A lont time ago it was an issue, nowadays no-one I know pays much attention to it, either the Pill ( if you are in a stable relationship) or a Condom is used due to other prevalent health risks both are considered contraception. So why would a political party do away with those acceptable methods when it is saying ok helth risks notwithstanding wew do not agree. if the future of America is decided on whether Contraception is allowed or not , then I pity Americans .

It would be nice if you'd do some research before you pontificate. The contraception issue is not about Republicans not wanting women to have it. There are numerous Republicans who are pro-choice -- the nice way to say that they're in favor of abortion.Khun Paul wrote:Now apart from the race card which is a dead duck as far as I can ascertain, we now have the card that is raised by the R epublicans about Contraception.

The contraception issue is about religious groups (Jews, Christians, Catholics) and the religions themselves being forced to provide contraception, which is against their teachings. It is the government forcing their doctrine on people and violates the First Amendment to the Constitution.
A prescription of birth control pills is about $12 per month. There is no shortage in receiving them, and I have never ever heard of anyone being denied them. This issue has not been introduced by the Secular Left to provide birth control as much as it is being used as another intrusion by imposing big government mandates into private decisions.
