Phuket - Where to stay? What to see and do?

After my 2004 engagement to my (now) wife, Jack, she and I went to Phuket and stayed for at least a week. One evening while we were visiting one of the gals she knows who was working in an Italian's bar located off Bangla Road in one of the bar-congested sois, the gent with me in the attached photo made a big effort to coax me to try the bar he was advertising for. He didn't seem to have a command of any English, and actually spoke barely at all, but he definitely was offering a good deal! However, because the advertised bar was adjacent to the one Jack's friend was tending, I felt unable to venture into the other, particularly since I believe it may have had a few ladies inside who might have attached themselves to me if Jack wasn't with me. But I thought that this was an excellent beer price for that location! Jack too the photo, by the way.

well who needs to speak english with a sign like that....

.... is that 4 changs for 150 baht , it looks like it.
well i have'nt been to phuket for must be 10 years this year, i was involved with a beer bar in soi Bangla for a few years, and the cost of beer hasn't changed at all, i think its actually cheaper now than then. Even when i first came to los in 1988, i remember the beer singh/kloster/amarit was around 50-70 baht a bottle in most bars i even remember paying 40 baht. Its nice to see somethings do-not change in 18 years.

Pattaya - small bottle (of any) beer = 65 baht in a regular bar or 100 (average) in a go go.

Udon - Large Leo/Chang = 45 baht in a Thai bar or 70 in Farang bars

Seems that Udon is a much cheaper place.

70 baht for large, agreed thats a deal.(udon) or 3 for 100----local super, drinking alone in the garden!
but the large tourist areas still roughly the same price as 18 years ago. The marine pattaya charged 90 baht small bottle in 89-90,slightly cheaper for go-go's,last time i was there it was 100 but a few years ago. out of big tourist areas the large bottles are more available in bars,don't think i have ever had a large one at a beer bar in pattaya.
but on the whole prices haven't changed much.

maybe some of the ex-service men that were stationed in Thailand years and years ago may mention the price of beer then, and brands too.

Well, I was a steenkeen civilian defense contractor who worked with the military back in the '60s and '70s but I did drink a few beers. The going price during those years in most bars in Udon and Pattaya was 10 baht or 50 cents in US money, equivalent to 19 baht these days. Bangkok bars did charge more but CRS anymore. About 20 or 30 baht, I suppose.

Brands? Singha and Krating Thong. No foreign brands.

Not too many drank the large beers in those days in bars, that I remember. That 5% alcohol content or whatever it is would (still does?) wipe you out after 4 or 5 of the Beer Yai's. Made for a short night out if you drank one or two of those in each saloon.

Yes, BM, the price being advertised was indeed four Changs for 150 Baht. I'm sorry that the image comes off so very large and grainy when it's opened--it looks fine when I open it from the file on my computer! I wonder if all of my photos would have the same poor result once uploaded?

I'll try once more with this other shot of Jack and I in Phuket on that same occasion. I didn't expect that she would be so adept at sucking down a shooter, so I held back and got my butt kicked in this brief contest.

Garnet, looks like that's one of my favourite tipples, a B52.
The other week I was in Falang Alley and ordered a B52. It came to me with a plastic straw and was set on fire. Normally I just down it in one, so blew the flame out and went to down drink.
Big mistake. In my drunken state, I'd forgotten that the glass would still be hot. Result, grabbing girls gin and tonic to cool down burnt lip.
