Health Food Store, Herbal Remedies, Etc.

Post by redwolf » January 16, 2013, 11:00 pm

While I have an excellent line on where to get the best steak, wine, cheese, and just about any other farang food, and will continue to buy and consume almost unmoderated amounts of the stuff until I literally explode, I still ask;

Where, if any, are the health food stores, places with organic food and "health food"? Royal Project in Central is a start, but if that's it in Udon (very likely so) then this place is still light years behind.

As it should be eh?

But if you happen to know where to get healthy or even organic foods, teas, juices, herbal remedies, do tell.

I'd like to say I'm buying this stuff because I'm going to start my new business "Red Wolf Yoga Center Ashram Spiritual Retreat Snake Show Village"

But in reality it's not so grand, it's that Thai grandma lives here with us. And to hear her hacking up at night just because of her stomach condition, back home I'd have been able to dash out and grab some herbal lozenges.

But this ain't California (and I don't want it to be). But I'd do anything to curtail the hurling sounds from down in the galley. :badteeth: :badteeth: :badteeth:

Is there an online site (with a health food store/herbal remedies shop based in BKK or some such?) that you can order non-perishable goods from? I'd get some items for Gran and miself aswell.

Last I heard Thailand was waaaay into Organic food, that growing it was a big deal, very profitable. But that also came with the caveat that almost all of it is exported to wealthy markets like Singapore.

My guess is the forum might not be the perfect place to ask. For example if I were to simply state I have 50 cases of Cialis and Viagra each on sale for just a few bundred baht, the sudden flood of PM's would break the UM forum software. But Health Food? Perhaps it'll get one or two replies, an instance of cajoling, a well wisher but surey not more.

At least I meant well. :badteeth:

You could try the Chinese pharmacy across the street from Bangkok Bank on Phosri Rd for herbal medicines/concoctions. The pharmacist there still does his blending the old fashioned way.
There are a variety of snake oil vendors selling wonder medicines....such as http://www.nanaherbal.com/intra or the Scotch branch chicken, bird's nest, or prune cococtions that cost an arm and a leg at most all grocery stores.
And then you have the home-grown herbal blender, such as my wife, who now has about 60 buckets of fermenting herbs, fruits, veggies......all purportedly good for your health and sure to cure whatever ails you. I equate it to the two tablespoons of vinegar for your health routine......but many Thais are big believers in the concoctions.

Here are a few other links you might be interested in:

Finally, you could go native.....hunting jungle rats/jungle fowl (no hormone/antibiotic injections), pick wild herbs/veggies/mushrooms from the jungle, get your honey straight from nature, select from ant eggs/crickets/other beetles for your protein......there are people in my neighborhood that survive on that sort of food and seem to be perfectly healthy. When grandma is hacking up phlegm, they'll find the appropriate tree, hack off some back, boil it up and feed it to her.....and in a short while she'll be back on her feet.

Certified 100% organic, range fed meat.....such as this delectable jungle rat readily available in Thailand. Shortly after I posted the above response, I noted our gardener cleaning a freshly caught jungle rat. It's a shame there's not a better name.....as the meat is quite tasty......if you can avoid thinking about what you're eating....sort of like red ant eggs.

Just be careful of anyone trying to pass off a sewer rat as a jungle rat. Eeeeeew!

Our gardener aged the jungle rat with a day's worth of sun rays. His wife bbq'd it for breakfast today. I was far on the other side of our property this morning and caught whiffs of it passing by.....and it smelled delicious. Tasted even better!

perfect, great responses all. thanks for the useful links, solid stuff, just what I was looking for.

but I imagine if I try to bring grandma a rat, she'll return the favor perhaps by dropping a cobra in my sock drawer.

I might take you up on that propolis stuff mash, -anything from bees seems spot on, especially while we still have bees on the planet that is.

amazed this post got replies, I'd almost abandoned the idea of even checking back for it.

If you're looking for bee related items, you might consider going for the real McCoy before going for something that's been processed...put into a pill/powder.
You can buy bee hives with honey still intact at many of the village markets.......or containing the young larvae......or freshly bottled honey. If grandma is going to take anything related to bees, I'd guess she'd prefer the natural way rather than the modern way.....assuming she's a typical Thai granny.

My wife had a problem with deep coughing, especially at night........not conducive to either of us getting a good night's sleep. After much delay, she finally went to see a doctor......who told her it was probably a sinus related condition. I thought the doctor was crazy (the cough was one of those deep chest sort of things). He prescribed zyrtec (available locally in brand name or generic). It worked like a champ.

If you're trying to atone for all the ills of your younger life, Thailand offers a wide variety of herbs, spices, and fruits that are touted to get rid of your most persistent parasites. I'm not into coffee enemas or drinking some ill liquid that will vacuum out my innards, but I will eat an occasional snack like those in the photo. I bought both packs at the health shop just in front of the cashiers at TOPS. 40 baht each. They may not be for every taste......but I enjoy them.
It's the first time I've tried anything with perilla seeds. Black sesame is one of my favorites, whether it's on a freshly baked bun or in an Asian style snack. I'll be back for more.
