As the historic 2016 U.S. presidential election approaches, major Wall Street analysts agree that the S&P 500 will likely sell off if Donald Trump wins, and at least hold gains if Hillary Clinton wins.
The consensus view is that Clinton does prevail, but analysts are concerned that the final election result may drag beyond Tuesday night in a tight or contested race. And there is always the possibility that the Street gets the election wrong, just as traders did not expect the U.K. to vote to leave the European Union in June. The S&P 500 fell 5 percent after "Brexit" before recovering.
A Barclays spokesman said "The S&P 500 could potentially fall 11 to 13 percent if Trump wins the election, Keith Parker, global equity strategist, said in a Nov. 1 note. If Clinton wins, the index could rise 2 to 3 percent.
"We see the U.S. election as first: a risk-off/on event initially that has the greatest effect on equities/rates given the uncertainty," he said. "Second, a macro event that (affects) currencies and to a lesser extent commodities; lastly, a micro event that (affects) a number of industries but one that will play out over time as agendas are implemented."
After the Oct. 28 market reaction to news about a new FBI probe into Clinton's emails, Barclays found that health care could underperform by 2 to 3 percent if Clinton wins.
Other notable stock reactions that day included weakness in trade-related equities such as railroads, trucking and air freight, particularly railroad Kansas City Southern, which Barclays said has the highest sales to Mexico in the S&P."
Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last.

I guess many thought the United States would step back from the abyss. They believed, and the polls led them to feel sure, that Americans would not, in the end, hand the most powerful office on earth to an unstable bigot, sexual predator and compulsive liar.

People all around the world had watched and waited, through the consecutive horrors of the 2016 election campaign, believing the Trump nightmare would eventually pass. But today the United States – the country that had, from its birth, seen itself as a beacon that would inspire the world, a society that praised itself as “the last best hope of earth”, the nation that had seemed to be bending the arc of history towards justice, as Barack Obama so memorably put it on this same morning eight years ago – has stepped into the abyss. Now lets see if President Trump can deliver on promises and not lead the world down the path of destruction.

Haven't been here for months!
IMHO at least the lessor of two 'Arseholes' prevailed. I'll accept, along with Britex, the short term loss in the stock markets --- In fact tomorrow is a great day to BUY!!!

For the Democrats -- Where the hell was John Kerry in this mess????

Just my two bobs worth!

Great news, I hoped he would win. Just have to wait and see the new world order in action with the USA, Russia, The Netherlands, UKIP and German far right in the same camp imo.

I never got the American sense of humour, but fair play...this cracks me up.

To be honest I'd of been more worried with Hilary Clinton in charge because at least with Trump you know what he's thinking as he generally just says it out loud. Honest Hilary she is not!

The true work horse of that whole administration, relegated to endlessly globe trotting in vain.

Bet they regret shoving him off to the side for being the wrong color and gender. Their mistake.

He had all the qualifications to lead the country.

Also how did Hillary initially get into congress anyways?

She was never anything until after Bill got caught getting a hummer.

George Cohen must have known this day would come when he penned this chorus ....

Over there, over there,
Send the word, send the word over there -
The Trump is coming,
The Lump is coming,
The drums rum-tumming
Ev'rywhere.
So prepare, say a pray'r,
Send the word, send the word to beware.
The count is over, they're in big bover,
And they can't put it right, for five years
Over there.
