Flawed study maybe, as it talks about Units of Alcohol & not the specific drink?

the study showed that even those that consume large amounts of alcohol have a lower rate of diabetes than those who do not drink alcohol at all. But, the article doesn't get into liver issues, weight issues (lots of calories in that booze!) and other related health issues connected with drinking.. I think it would be fair to say that moderation is key and having a few drinks each week can't hurt...

I think the key is this:
"Conclusions/interpretation
Our findings suggest that alcohol drinking frequency is associated with risk of diabetes and that consumption of alcohol over 3–4 days per week is associated with the lowest risk of diabetes, even after taking average weekly alcohol consumption into account."

This suggests that thirst for alcohol is caused by something related to the cause of diabetes.
