http 1.0, 1.1 or 2.0?

Post by fredwilliams » October 7, 2017, 7:06 pm

How do I check my browser and server http versionS from Win 7?

Hoping that BobHelm will read this :D If I access a state of the art website in the UK which was ONLY designed for UK-based users, which factors will effect my usability of it, e.g. my server being less advanced than the UK website host server, differences between http versions here and there, my local ISP, etc?

Cheers!

Fred http 2 has been supported by all major browsers since the end of 2015.

http versions & geographical locations restrictions have nothing to do with each other.
If you are trying to enter a web site in the UK & it will not let you do so then that is because the site is deliberately reading your IP address & refusing you access based on your location.

It is possible to access some of these sites by altering your IP address with a VPN. However some of the restricted sites also ban known VPN IP addresses as well as using other 'tricks' to sniff out non native users..

^ I do love your simple explanations, Bob.

So, just to clarify, is http 2.0 now running everywhere and the global standard?

Re: the site in the UK. I can go to 5-star hotels with ADSL business suites and access it no probs. But regular wifi, yes probs!

Some websites will, undoubtedly, still be using http 1.1, but that does not matter to the user as Browsers can understand both. http 2 is just a little quicker - for lack of a very long & technical answer.

There is a maximum speed for wifi protocols that are far less than ADSL.
It depends what standard your equipment is running as to how limited that theoretical maximum is. Things like walls can hugely effect the actual rate that it is physically possible to achieve, as can the number of devices using the wifi..
802.11b offered up to 11 megabits per second (Mbps) 802.11a and 802.11g offer up to 54 Mbps.
