A favourite song?
Re: A favourite song?
"God Bless America," popularizes by Kate Smith in the fifties, might be a top song.
"Amazing Grace" is another candidate for the top song.

oh yes, they were really the days, when you espied the lady of your dreams, plucked up the courage to go across and said "May I have this dance" if she said yes, you held her hand and escorted her to the floor where you put your hand on her waist, pulled her close to you and for the next five minutes you were in heaven . That all finished with the advent of R&R where you just simply threw her about and jigged up and down like a crazed zombie for a few minutes, then spent the next ten minutes in the gents making sure your quiff was just right before going out and doing it all again . Yes no doubt in my book R&R killed romance, why I even heard one fella simply walk up to a girl and asked "Do you f..k" she replied "for you you sweet talker , I might "that was it they didn't bother to jive just simply got their coats .As I've said before"Fings ain't wat they used to be" I know which I prefer.
Ageing is a privilige denied to many .

I hear ya! R&B started the rot and I recall the weekend dances in the 70's where the girls danced in a circle around their handbags on the floor, while the blokes circled like sharks, absolutely clueless about dancing but eager for the night's 'trap'. Having a decent motor was always a leg-opener but for those without wheels, cadging a ride to the dance in one of your mates 'pussy magnet' cars made getting back home all a bit perilous.trubrit wrote: ↑October 9, 2017, 6:12 amoh yes, they were really the days, when you espied the lady of your dreams, plucked up the courage to go across and said "May I have this dance" if she said yes, you held her hand and escorted her to the floor where you put your hand on her waist, pulled her close to you and for the next five minutes you were in heaven . I recall trying the old charm method at a Sunday night dance at the Glen Ruth Hotel in Rutherglen. I had been eyeing a tall, fit-looking blonde lass the previous weekend so finally plucked up courage to ask only to get, "Can ye dance with me mate? I'm sweatin' already."

Actually, that dance started in the 1930s. Here is an example from 194i before R and R existed.trubrit post[/quote wrote:oh uteThat all finished with the advent of R&R where you just simply threw her about and jigged up and down like a crazed zombie for a few mins, then spent the next ten minutes in the gents making sure your quiff was just right before going out and doing it all again . In latin dancing, the jive is a dance style that originated in the United States from African-Americans in the early 1930s. It was popularized in 1934 by Cab Calloway. It is a lively and uninhibited variation of the Jitterbug, a form of Swing dance. Glenn Miller introduced his own jive dance in 1938 with the song "Doin' the Jive" which never caught on.

Very athletic but dancing? No way. We used to have dancing lessons at school where we learnt not only to dance properly but respect for the female with whom we wished to dance. Those videos show the obvious roots of that behaviour, almost animalistic in a primitive way.Not one of the finer imports from the US.in my mind.Laan Yaa Mo wrote: ↑October 9, 2017, 9:08 amActually, that dance started in the 1930s. I'm surprised that this one hasn't been mentioned, it was such a huge hit back in the day. Queen the original album was probably the best they did but it isn't very well known.

At school, we learnt the waltz and square dancing. It was fun although most of us were painfully shy. Also, the girls and boys had to dress and act politely,

Re: A favourite song?
If anyone thinks GlamRock was all about Glitter take a look at The Sweet performing Hell Raiser live at The Hammersmith Odeon in72-73 miles ahead of there time or Slade doing a song called Get Down n Get with it live. Considering there was little or no effects on the Guitars at that time the Sound is heavy. Noddy Holder had such a powerful Gritty voice it has been suggested he was asked to replace Bon Scott before it was offered to Bryan Johnson in AC/DC.

A few more from the Glam Rock era, how could we forget sexy bum Quattro?
The Sparks video made me laugh, can you imagine all the fluffies these days if the organist appeared on TV? My word there would be uproars, mind I suppose we were somewhat gender neutral in those days with our long hair, flares and stack shoes, way ahead of our time.

Re: A favourite song?
I don't have a favourite song but a favourite era. late 70's and early 80's aussie pub rock bands.
Most of my local pubs with live music shut at 3am, 4 or 5 nights a week. Many a difficult wake up for work.
Just some bands off a list I found like below. I saw the majority. It was the aussie rock era but credit where credit is due a lot of kiwi bands or kiwi's in the band helped create this memorable time in my life. It coincided with the disco era which did not interest me unless you wanted to check out the snobby girls.
Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, Rose Tattoo, Hunters & Collectors, Paul Kelly, Sunnyboys, Australian Crawl, Divinyls, Skyhooks, Icehouse, The Church and Dragon, "Weddings, Parties, Anything", Painters & Dockers, The Johnnys, The Screaming Tribesmen, The Lime Spiders, The Dingoes and V. Spy V. Spy. and many more.

Why Vince, you softy! You took my question and made it into a post more popular than any I've ever had! Mine are like the early Alzheimer's test, and people go, "Oh fk, wish he hadn't posted that... I guess I ought to see if I've got it. Maybe tomorrow."
Anyway, to the question: My favorite song is And I Love You So, sung here by Don McLean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpV46ycq0dQ To me, it tells the truth about loneliness, love and how love is what makes life worth living. Come by sometime.

Re: A favourite song?
I wondered when you would post your song, Don McClean eh? Well of course I also have a song by the same artist, I've had it sung and bought for me a few times through my life. In reality I was called Vince Everitt after Elvis in Jailhouse Rock, it was nothing to do with Mr Van Gogh

Don McClean - Vincent https://youtu.be/tNdYLGAxcWA
I'm sure your lovely lady and Fa will sort something out. Please don't forget to do the test
