Don't know for Certain, But I'd say very FEW Carry them now,The Commision the banks take of you is quite a lot,But I Would say if you go to ROUGH Places Go with CASH & Keep it in yer Under Crackers or somewhere safe..

I Think you can buy a Pre-Paid card with you're money on it But I've Never Used one,So can't say anything about it... :-" :-"

Bangkok Bank buy & sell travellers cheques.
Bit of a calculation to decide if to use them or debit/credit cards as the banks make money out of whatever you do.

Bringing £3K cash & then travelling around Thailand would not be something I would personally entertain, but I do have friends who come to Udon & only bring UK currency with them.

I use western union online you need to set up an account while in uk by sending a scan of your passport then you can transfer into a Thai bank account online from uk or here in Thailand costs 2.90 each time and if you send more than 501 pounds at a time u get same exchange rate as gold shop gives for 50 pound notes takes around 36 hours to come through and u can send upto 4000 pounds at a time much better exchange rate than drawing on your debit card from uk bank and costs less per transaction than the local atm charges

Get a fee free credit card (I use clarity from Halifax bank). You get the mastercard exchange rate, which is far better than the rate you get in banks in Thailand, and only have to pay the ATM fee (there is interest on cash advances, but pay off quickly and it's trivial). Then get cash as you want it (but due to ATM fees, best to max out each time), Also purchases no extra fees whatsoever.

If changing cash, go to the concourse just above the airport line rail link at swampy and look for the Superrich exchange booth. They give the best exchange rate, often greater than one more baht to the pound than the traditional Thai banks. However they do not have an outlet in Udon.
