My experience with red plates on the truck took me all over the Kingdom. I was never asked at any checkpoint to produce any paperwork.

Chiang Mai, BKK, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Khon Kaen, Khorat, Surin, Sakhon Nakhon and Kanchanaburi.

To be honest, I forgot that I even had red plates when I was traveling. I just went.

Pretty much was my daytime experience. Did have a young -------- cop pull me over on the expressway headed north out of Bangkok around 4 PM trying to shake me down but I played no speak Thai better than he could play no speak English and he gave up trying to explain his reason and waived me away. Did have another cop near KK in daylight who was visibly miffed when the brown book showed a current entry.

Only pulled up twice after dark; the first time around 10 PM in Bangkok and the other was around 1 AM south of Korat. This was ages ago and both times they extracted the nominal 400 red notes specifically for the red plate at night violation. Seems that ticketing is much more 'controlled' these days with the senior cop in his tent and witnessing officer and genuine tickets, proper fines, explanations of the violation and a receipt.
