Are we allowed to mention the Germans?
Struggled in their 1941 campaign but are looking very strong for Barbarossa revisited. French don't have the best record on Russian soil either as their defeat in 1812 showed. I fancy a Spain v Germany final. What do the experts think?

If I remember correctly the French and English (jointly with Turkey) were the last visiting teams to win on Russian Soil in the 1856 tournament although my History teacher seemed to think there had been a bit of a miss carriage of justice ..... he would always point at the map and utter words that sounded like "Crime here"

I'm not confident if by chance we meet up with the french later in the tourny as it took us 100 years to beat them last time they hung around until the end of a game

"Leroy Sane stunned Germany team-mates with his big-time ego before being axed by his country."

German superstar with a "big time ego" nah surely not

I think Japan were successful on Russian soil in 1904 or thereabouts.

Excellent point. So was Bobby Fischer. He behaved like he was playing Spassky in the deepest bowels of the Kremlin.

I fancy the Germans will win again. Apologies but football is kind of their game now.

OK so not only are they bringing this cr*p into the World Cup, but it is now going to influence how the officials deal with the game.
I was under the impression that the linesman was there to indicate if someone was offside or not... thats his job

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/44459554

Why not do away with all on pitch officials if no notice is going to be taken of them?

Can see it now ..... lino keeps flag down play continues (even though virtually everyone knows there has been an offside not called) about 3 minutes later, after someone has had their leg broken by a last ditch tackle that there was no need to make if the flag had been raised, the VAR guy tells the ref to go back as matey was offside in the build up ......... Does the clock get reset to the time of the original incident, or are the fans going to be penalised by losing another 3 mins of a game that they have paid to see?

So first we have half the Mex squad out on the town with a bunch of bargirls,
Then we get the Turks (Sorry Jeermans) in the Deutsche Mannschaft clearly saying that they are Turkish
And now The Spanish on the brink of sacking the manager on the eve of the tournament.

I suspect William Hills are at this moment having a serious rethink with their number crunching

LOPETEGUI FUTURE

Spain are due to give a press conference any minute where the future of coach Julen Lopetegui is sure to be clarified.

The media in Spain are reporting that federation chief Luis Rubiales is furious at Lopetegui's decision to join Real Madrid after the World Cup, and that he could dismiss the coach today.

Marca report: "The future of Julen Lopetegui as Spanish national team manager hangs by a thread. Rubiales feels betrayed and his anger has only increased as the hours have passed."

And an update from Guellem ...

Guillem Balague

@GuillemBalague

Meetings between federation, captains and Lopetegui continue -the press conference is delayed further

Players originally didn’t want to get involved but lately they suggested continuity is the best policy.

The federation has been gearing towards sacking in the last few hours

BREAKING: SPAIN APPOINT FERNANDO HIERRO

Spain have confirmed Fernando Hierro will replace Julen Lopetegui as head coach. He will appear before the media later this afternoon and will take charge of his first game in just two days - against Portugal on Friday.

Not bad ....... about 2 hrs from sacking the boss to hiring his replacement ......... how come it takes weeks in England? =;

Anton Toloui @SkyAnton

All done here at England’s first training session in Zelenogorsk. I think my favourite part was the Russian Police coming in to our technical booth to ask for the same goody bags handed to the dozens of children in attendance. You’re never too old or too serious for free swag.

Suspect that is a case of fast learning by Russian Police Officers after their Summer Hols in Thailand last year

& so, finally, the talking stops & the tournament begins... :D

I am going to display games & kick off times in British Summer Time & then readers can just add 6 hours to discover the Thai kick off time.
There are so many different sources for watching the live games but in the UK all games have been split between BBC & ITV, so I will show which as well.
Here are the first few days worth of games being played..

Unfortunately there are not enough EPL threads and Mr Statts has been kind enough to update news for those EPL tragic's.

But back to the real show which is about to start in Russkie land.
Looking forward to hopefully the first big upset on Saturday, Socceroos over the Frogs, you have to dream I suppose.
Have 1 day off here in Dubai because of the 4 day EID holiday. Thank you allah. And my seat booked at the sports bar downstairs from my apartment, just a 30 floor elevator ride away, then it's into the cheap promo beers during the tournament. Only Carlsberg though at 25 Dirim a pint, a 40% discount \:D/ . That's about 215 bht a pint, normally 360 bht. Cheap as chips.
I think a draw would be the best to hope for our Aussies, they are 12/1 to win. Not enough in my book. Forgot a zero.
Good luck to the all other countries, even those who did not make it and are on the sidelines.

Oh damn. We haven't finished the analysis of the previous season.

British summer time? I hope Giggle can handle that.

Then obviously you should restrict your literary 'gems' :-s  to the current EPL thread!
I am sure the REAL WC fans will be hoping your post is not the prelude to you and your mob spoiling serious & interesting discussion of the WORLD CUP for us by now selfishly taking over and disrupting this thread . ](*,) ](*,) :fryingpan:

Is Peter Smeichel's (sp) son playing in goal for Denmark? If so, the Danes might have a chance to advance if he plays as well as his father.
