A woman was detained in Dubai for three days with her four-year-old daughter after drinking a complimentary glass of wine on a flight from London, an NGO has said.

Ellie Holman, a dentist originally from Sweden who lives in Sevenoaks, Kent, with her English partner, Gary, and their three children, was denied water and made to clean toilets while in custody, according to the human rights group Detained in Dubai.

The NGO, formed to help people held in the United Arab Emirates, said it was representing the woman and her daughter Bibi, who was “terrified” by the experience.

Holman, 44, was arrested on 13 July after having one glass of wine on her eight-hour Emirates flight, the group said.

She was taken into custody after an immigration official questioned her about her visa and asked if she had consumed alcohol.

a rather factless article. What did the government in Dubai actually charge her with?? The article indicates her visa was invalid and that filming the immigration officer with her phone was also illegal. Then it is implied she was arrested for alcohol consumption provided on the Emirates Airline... Some "Detained in Duba" group rattle on about that.. And in 3 days she spent 30,000 pounds in legal fees?? And where was the British Embassy in all this?? No Consular visit?

More to this than meets the eye.
Drinking alcohol on the flight is legal or they would not provide it.
There was a problem with her visa, and she done a wobbly!
Also filming them on her mobile was not a good thing!
Immigration dont like that up em!
Bit like Thailand. You upset them, youll get no where!
Always have cap in hand . Best way to go!

Agree with the above
Dubai Immigration normally bend over backwards for ladies with children travelling alone. However if you kick off and start disrespecting an Emirati you can be in a world of poo and drinking alcohol will always be added to the list of charges. This lady has done something very differently wrong or it is just false news. Why would a NGO start spouting off about it. The what the UK Consulate in Dubai is for. Bet this just disappears. Speaking from experience, lived/worked there for a number of years.

An EU citizen doesn't need a Visa for the UAE for under 30 days.
Story smells.

this is a perfect example of fake news , someone trying to make a story out of nothing . it's not even what they are telling you , it's what they're not telling you. filming inside immo would be a big no no . As rick says 30 day visa , but what was she doing there ? maybe working ? . people making a meal out of nothing , maybe she showed signs of being drunk and got abusive ? who knows as we are not given all the information .

It wasn't 30,000 in legal fees, it was a loss of that in legal fees and lost work.

Maybe she was going to do some expensive dental work in the UAE.

Old news now.
She's well and truly gone.
It happened on the 13th July. A Friday. That's the holiday here and also the notorious all you can eat and drink brunch day.
If only she had not got into strife at the airport she could have joined her other Brit girlfriends and got well and truly smashed, like I see a lot of young brits staggering along the roads here in Dubai trying to get a cab.

Remember those Friday Brunch's well, (sort off) Eat and drink as much as possible in 4 hours and then try not to get into trouble getting home. The pre 2009 property crash time was amazing. All the arrest's for having sex on the beach were on a Friday evening. False News story.

The Dubai government has reportedly apologised to a mother jailed for drinking a glass of wine on a flight from London and have said she is “free to go home.

Dr Ellie Holman claims she received an apology over the phone after she and her 4-year-old daughter Bibi were detained in the country for three days.

She told the Daily Mail that the Dubai government even said they would pay for her flight home.

The dentist said she was “ecstatic” upon hearing the news.

She told the paper: “I can't believe this is over. When I got the call from the government telling me they were dropping the case I was in shock.

“I was told to prepare for a long stay in Dubai and a prison sentence. The man on the phone apologised on behalf of the immigration official who put me and Bibi through all of this. I feel like a weight is off my chest.”

The 44-year-old who had flown out to Dubai for a visit said she hopes she will be home on the first available flight.

According to the Mail, Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed personally intervened to ensure Dr Holman’s release.

It is understood he made the decision after viewing the worldwide coverage of the incident.

Dr Holman was held after her Emirates flight touched down at Dubai International Airport where she was locked in a detention centre, according to reports.

The dentist, a Swedish national who lives in Sevenoaks, Kent, was told she could face spending up to a year in the Arab state for her case to be settled.

Dr Holman said she was not allowed to call her husband from the detention centre and that her four-year-old daughter was forced to go to the toilet on the cell floor.

She said: “My little girl had to go to the toilet on the cell floor. I have never heard her cry in the same way as she did in that cell.”

The mother said she was served a glass of red with her meal during the flight on July 13, and that drinking it led to her arrest.

After landing she was quizzed by an immigration official, who said her visa was not valid and that she must buy a ticket to return to London immediately.

Following a stand-off with the officer Dr Holman said he then asked if she had been drinking, before telling her it was a crime to be in possession of or consume alcohol.

The mother said her and her daughter were then led to a cell at the airport and had their passports confiscated before being taken to a police station.

There she was asked to take a blood sample to test for alcohol, Dr Holman claimed.

After being held, she was reportedly released on bail. Her daughter and husband flew back to the UK but she remained in Dubai with friends.

Seems there are two sides to this story. Hardly surprising.
