From The National News Bureau:

NONG KHAI, 20 August 2018 (NNT) – The Mekong River has reached critical levels in Nong Khai province, causing its tributaries to overflow into urban and farming areas.

The Mekong River has reached its highest level so far this year in Nong Khai province, rising over its banks by 26 centimeters at latest measurement. The river is being fed by waters from the north.

Flooding has already been reported in Sri Chiang Mai district, prompting residents to evacuate and move their property to higher ground.

The Mekong River has backed up drainage systems in the district with water now seeping along roadways. Military personnel have been tasked with patching cracks and drainage pipes with sandbags to slow the seepage.

Citizens in the district have also taken precautions, barricading their homes with sandbags and securing river rafts. Waters have been reported flowing into farmland in Sangkhom, Sri Chiang Mai, Muang and Pon Pisai districts.

Governor Ronachai Jitaraviset assured that residents of the province received prior warning and that assistance has been prepared.

Muang Nong Khai District Chief, Sophon Huangyat, acting as Nong Khai’s Permanent Secretary, ordered drainage pipes be patched and that water pumps be installed to handle the situation. Authorities have also been sent to care for bed-ridden patients.

The Mekong River in Nakhon Panom province has been measured at 11.67 meters, nearing the critical level of 12 meters, in Ubon Ratchathani at 14 meters, just half a meter from overflow and in Loei province at critical height. The governor of Loei has issued a call for district chiefs to warn their constituents of likely flooding.

Bueng Kan province is in a similar situation due to Nguem Hydroelectric Dam increasing its discharge to over 1,200 cubic meters per second and runoff from Nong Khai.
